Give Your Garage A Much-Needed Makeover With These 6 Tips

October 5, 2022

The garage is one of the most neglected areas in a home. It’s often the catch-all place for old furniture, tools of all kinds, mementos, kid’s toys, and even seasonal decorations. It’s also not the most appealing part of your home-–from black oil spills on the floor, cobwebs onto the ceiling, to chipping wall paints.

If you have a cluttered and drab-looking garage that only seems to get worse every time, here are some tips to help clean, organize, and transform this part of your home.

1. Start With A Deep Clean

When you have less stuff and clutter to worry about, organizing becomes much easier. So, the first step in giving your garage a makeover is to clean the clutter. Remove your car from the garage along with the other stuff. Take out everything. You want the space to be empty.

Take your time to declutter and reduce hazards. Put everything in your driveway or your front yard, organizing each item by type. Go through the things you should throw away, donate, or keep.

With all the clutter gone, you can proceed to the next makeover tips.

2. Upgrade Your Door

An ugly, dinged-up garage door can hurt your curb appeal and your home’s resale value. If you have the budget, replacing and upgrading your garage door can create a powerful statement about the house style.

There are several materials to choose from. Wood adds a beautiful and rustic appeal to your home’s exterior. It is also a natural insulator and is an eco-friendly option that adds a distinctive country aesthetic to your exterior.

For a more contemporary and durable option, steel is your best option. Known for being lightweight and flexible, steel is a lot cheaper than other materials and is available in various colors and designs.

Replacing your garage door can instantly transform your garage from the outside. However, if you don’t have the budget yet, you may consider fixing and painting your existing garage door instead.

3. Paint The Walls

A fresh coat of paint can instantly bring life to any space. And garages are no exception. You can opt for neutral colors to give your garage a clean and simple look. Or you can opt for brighter, bolder colors that invigorate and make the space look more active.

You can also add baseboard and crown molding to put the finishing touch on this simple DIY makeover project. Once you’re done, your garage will look more appealing and less gloomy.

4. Don’t Forget The Floor

Don’t spoil the fresh coat of paint on your garage walls with dingy and dull concrete flooring covered in ugly spots and stains. Finish the space by applying an epoxy coating that not only transforms the overall look of your floors, but also provides better resistance to oil stains and makes cleaning a lot easier.

Applying epoxy coating can be time-consuming, and it has a two-part application system followed by a sealing topcoat. Hence, make sure you understand how to properly apply epoxy to ensure a durable and long-lasting floor coating.

5. Don’t Skimp On Storage And Organization Solutions

Every garage needs multiple sets of cabinets, shelving, and organizers. Most garages fail to function to their true potential due to poor organization. And depending on how many things you have in your garage, certain storage systems fail to keep clutter at a minimum.

Ideally, you want to have enough cabinets and shelving to store all kinds of tools, items, and equipment. Also, make sure to have different types of storage including cabinets, shelves, racks, hooks, and so much more. Don’t forget to invest in a locked cabinet if you’re keeping dangerous chemicals in your garage.

If you don’t have enough space on the sides, consider taking advantage of your overhead space. The ceiling is a suitable spot for hanging flat and long seasonal items such as ladders or golf gear. Just make sure that there’s enough clearance to avoid scratching your car’s roof.

6. Add Insulation

Your garage probably has the biggest door in your home. As such, it’s also likely to be a major source of heating loss. If you want to make your garage and overall indoor space cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, start adding some insulation.

Even if your garage isn’t fully furnished, adding some insulation between the studs can make this space more usable year-round. Plus, it also helps in making your home more energy efficient, ultimately saving on gas or electric bills.

If you’re becoming dismayed by the look and feel of your garage space, this is a sign to pay attention and give this hard-working area the makeover it deserves. With the above-mentioned tips and ideas, you can easily transform your garage from a drab-looking place to a useful, functional area you need.
