October 10, 2022

Some items of clothing are not suited to being subjected to a washing machine and there is an argument that you can actually preserve the longevity of your items and keep the fabrics in better shape when they are hand washed.

If you choose to use a hand wash dry cleaners to look after some of your more delicate and precious items. Or simply because the washing instructions require you to use a handwash option, you will be helping to ensure that your items stay in a good condition for as long as possible.

Does that mean handwashing your clothes could be a better alternative altogether?

Why choose to hand wash your clothes?

Handwashing clothes is ingrained in the culture of many societies, even allowing for the fact that washing machines are now widely available to do most of that task for you.

Even allowing for the fact that you have access to a device that will wash your clothes for you there are a number of viable reasons why it is worth considering the handwash option.

Firstly, there are cost and energy-saving principles that come down in favor of handwashing. If you are handwashing your clothes you will be saving on electricity costs and carrying out this everyday task in a much more eco-friendly way.

The other obvious reason why you would choose to handwash is when you are cleaning a garment that is made from a certain fabric that can only be washed by hand.

Delicate fabrics

There are a number of popular fabrics that are prized for their delicate feel and soft touch. The fact that they are so delicate in nature means you have to take great care to preserve them by washing them with caution.

Fabrics such as cashmere, silk, and wool will almost always benefit from being hand washed. This preserves their structure and integrity and ensures that they retain their shape and looks for as long as possible.

In some instances, you will ruin an item for good if you put it in the washing machine.

When gently hand washing these delicate items in either cold or lukewarm water you will be helping these delicate fabrics to look and feel good every time after you wash them by hand.

Some useful handwashing pointers

The first thing you should do with any garment is to check the care label and manufacturers instructions for guidance on how to wash the item. You will find that some fabrics can either be hand washed or machine washed, and some are only suitable to be hand washed.

Once you have decided to use the handwashing option you should be mindful of a couple of key points.

Always make sure that the water is not too hot. Hot water can ruin the delicate fibers of certain fabrics.

Only use the prescribed amount of detergent. Once washed and rinsed, soak the garment in a tub of clean water that has a small amount of fabric conditioner added to soften the clothing. This process also helps reduce the prospect of bobbling and static cling.

Handwashing your clothes may well be more labor-intensive than using a washing machine. However, the reward for your efforts will be clothes that look and feel great every time you wear them.
