The Must-Know Home Maintenance Checklist for Every Season

October 17, 2022

Home maintenance needs to be different for every season. This is in order to make sure that your house is ready for the upcoming season and the weather conditions that will follow. So if you’re thinking about taking care of your home for any upcoming season, here is the must-know checklist that will make it easier for you do to everything.

Spring maintenance

Spring maintenance is absolutely a must after a long winter. There are things that you should do in order to prepare your home for spring. Some of these things are:

  • Roof inspection - assessing your roof for damages is crucial if you live in a place with harsh winters. Make sure you climb up the ladder and check for holes and dents if there are any. Also, be sure to clean the debris, such as tree branches, and consider trimming trees if they happen to be too close to the roof.
  • Repair your driveway - first, you’ll have to check your driveway for any damages, such as potholes, cracks, and unevenness. If you spot anything, be sure to fix it right away. You’re probably going to use your driveway the most during the summer, so it is best to repair it in order to prevent falls and trips.
  • Inspect your HVAC system - summer is the time when air conditioners are used the most, and in that case, you should make sure that the HVAC system is ready before the summer starts. Hire a certified HVAC professional like Total Air to change the filters, do inspections and do needed repairs.

Summer maintenance

Summer is the season everyone looks forward to. The good news is, since the weather is hot, you have more options available. For example, when summer begins, you can do some of the following work.

  • Clean carpets - this is one of the best times to clean carpets manually. Since carpets are often superficially cleaned throughout the year, summer is the time when you can do some in-depth cleaning. So be sure to vacuum, steam, and shampoo your carpets, and then leave them outside to air dry.
  • Deal with all the plumbing issues - Plumbing issues happen regardless of the season. However, summer is the best time to take care of them all. This will prevent leaks and make sure that all your house plumbing is running smoothly. If you’re experiencing blocked drains in the bathroom or any other room for that matter, then be sure to contact the professional plumber in your area to take care of it promptly. Taking care of plumbing problems is crucial, mainly if you’ve been neglecting them during the rest of the year.
  • Paint your home - Painting and decorating cannot be done during the winter, due to cold temperatures and other weather conditions. This goes for both interior and exterior painting. If you want to beautify your home exterior, then painting the walls is a perfect place to start, and summer is the best season to do that.

Fall maintenance

Fall is the time when people prepare for colder weather. This is why you should make sure that your property is in order before winter starts, together with harsh temperatures.

  • Inspect and clean heating systems - you’ll probably start your heating before winter starts, so it is crucial to inspect and clean everything at the beginning of the fall. However, it is also important to hire a professional to avoid accidents.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors - in the winter, you’ll use a furnace all the time, and the furnace can also spew out harmful smoke. So be sure to test your smoke and Co2 detectors, and replace old batteries.
  • Seal doors and windows - keeping your home in cold months is a must. Sealing your doors and windows will make sure no outside cold will get inside. Seal cracks in your windows and doors by yourself, or hire a professional to do it for you.

Winter maintenance

Winter maintenance often requires less work, but you still need to do certain things to make sure your house is in order.

  • Clean your backyard from excess snow - this is a must-do, especially if you live in an area with heavy snowfall. Neglecting to do that can turn snow into thin ice, which can then cause slipping and other injuries
  • Clean interior spaces - Use the bitter cold as an opportunity to finish indoor house maintenance projects rather than an excuse to be lazy. Deep-clean all interior areas, including the basement, bathrooms, and garage.
  • The condenser coils on the rear or bottom of the refrigerator push heat out in order to keep the inside of the fridge cool. Vacuuming them at least once a year will get rid of dust and debris, and make sure your fridge runs smoothly.

Conclusion

These are some maintenance works that you should do every season. Feel free to add your own, and remember that some things need to be done, in order to ensure your home is safe, functioning, and beautiful.
