What can paving slabs be used for?

The best thing about paving slabs is their versatility. They can be used for pretty much every outdoor space, be it to make a beautiful pond, create a neat patio or make pathways that run around or in the middle of your garden. Whatever your idea for retouching the floors of your outdoor space, paving slabs are likely to be involved. They’re wonderfully low maintenance and surprisingly easy to lay.

Prepare your tools and materials

In terms of tools, you will need the following:

  • Towels
  • Rake
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Shovel
  • Rubber mallet
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Cement mixer (not mandatory)

You will also need the following materials:

  • Paving slabs
  • Sub-base aggregate
  • Sand
  • Cement

How to lay paving slabs

The first thing you need to do when laying paving slabs is to dig 150mm into your desired area. This creates the foundation for laying a compacted sub-base which should be filled at 100mm. Then, top up the remaining space with 40mm of concrete mix, leaving room for your paving slabs to slot into.

Now it’s time to start laying the paving slabs. Lay them 15mm into the concrete with a 10-15mm gap in between each one. Lay your slabs as you wish then leave them to set for at least 24 hours. When it’s set, fill the gaps between the slabs with the concrete mix.

What you can do with paving slabs

There are all sorts of ways to use paving slabs. One popular design trick it to keep your borders neat and using your slabs to make a linear garden edge. Another popular feature in gardens is the patio. Make your own by sectioning off a part with paving stones and use it for garden furniture, games or even a BBQ. Pond borders also bring an element of sophistication to any garden. Neaten up its borders and make the paved area as large as you like so you can fit in some furniture around the pond.

Finally, don’t be afraid to have fun! Crack open your paints and make your slabs more personal and even show off some of the kids’ artwork to make your garden unique to you.
