Know about Miscarriage

A miscarriage, also known as a spontaneous abortion, is a condition wherein the fetus dies in the womb before 20 weeks of pregnancy. The first trimester of the pregnancy, or the first three months of pregnancy, is when it commonly occurs. Most miscarriages are caused by chromosomal issues. It can be both physically and emotionally disturbing. 

There are several medical causes that lead to miscarriages. Most of these causes are beyond a person's control. Understanding the risk factors, symptoms, and causes, however, can help in better comprehending the incident and thereby getting any necessary support or treatment.

Symptoms indicating miscarriage:

Depending on which stage of the pregnancy you are, the symptoms that cause to miscarriage can differ from person to person. Sometimes it occurs so rapidly that you might not even be aware of your pregnancy before miscarrying. The following are some signs of a miscarriage:

  • Having sudden heavy bleeding with blood clots
  • Experiencing discharge of some fluid from vagina
  • Having severe pain or cramps

Condulting the doctor is essential if you experience any of these above symptoms during your pregnancy. These symptoms are possible signs of miscarriage but it is the doctor who can decide the right condition. 


Miscarriage can be due to the following cause: 

  • Chromosomal issues: 50% of all the possible first trimester miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities. It is during the process of fertilization the egg and the sperm come together with two sets of chromosomes.  When the egg or sperm have less chromosomes than the fertilized egg may have abnormal number of chromosomes which eventually leads to miscarriage. Till date it is not known why these chromosomal changes happen.
  • Lifestyle habits and other health conditions: Certain lifestyle habits and health conditions eventually lead to miscarriages. Some of them are as follows:
    • Excessive use of alcohol 
    • Intake of poor diet or having malnutrition
    • Intake of certain medicines
    • Having untreated thyroid hormonal disorder
    • Higher maternal age
    • Having un managed diabetes
    • Obesity
    • Having problem with shape of uterus, or cervix
    • Issue related to high blood pressure
    • Food poisoning 
    • Certain infections 
    • Trauma or injuries

Abortion vs Miscarriage

Miscarriage and abortion are completely two different terms. Miscarriage though is known as spontaneous abortion wherein the pregnancy terminates due to certain conditions especially within 20 weeks of pregnancy. While abortion is the term where the pregnancy is terminated either deliberately or accidentally. There are various types of abortion and these depends on the patient underlying health condition. The abortions can be either through medical procedure or via surgical procedures. 

How is a miscarriage diagnosed?

For a miscarriage to be diagnosed by the health practitioner, the health practitioner especially gynecologist shall preform ultrasound tests, check for the heartbeat of the fetal.

Certain blood tests, like the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone levels shall be measured, as low levels of these hormone indicate miscarriage. The health practitioner may carry out pelvic examination to checkout whether the cervix is opened or not. 

What are the treatments for a miscarriage?

Miscarriage treatment requires visit to the health care center as due to miscarriage the fetus must be removed from the uterus. In case any of the fetus parts are left inside the body it could raise the chances of infection, excessive bleeding and even other health related complications. Hence proper treatment must be availed from an expert gynecologist. 

In case the entire fetus tissue has been expelled out form the uterus then there is no further treatment needed. But still the doctor may ask in for an ultrasound to ensure that nothing is left inside the uterus. 

Generally, after miscarriage the body starts to remove all the fetus tissues through bleeding, but if required then medicines can be used that help in passing the tissues completely. In some cases, the surgical procedures are required to remove the tissues from the uterus. 

Generally, the risks of the treatment are very less and thus proper treatment can help you to overcome the trouble. 

Is it possible to get pregnant after having a miscarriage?

Generally, an emotional trauma is built around after a miscarriage. Most of the people are concerned of pregnancy after a miscarriage. It is possible to get pregnant after miscarriage as 87% of the people who have faced miscarriages had experiences normal pregnancies and deliveries. Thus, miscarriage should not be associated with infertility issues. 

But remember to wait till you have become physically as well as emotionally ready before getting pregnant for the next time after a miscarriage. 


Miscarriages are caused due to chromosomal issues, underlying health issues or certain lifestyle factors. It is a very emotional situation for the parents who are expecting baby. This loss in the form of miscarriage can be painful  but one should remember that miscarriage is not indicating any infertility issue. It does not means that you cannot have child, rather 87% of the women had normal deliveries despite having miscarriage earlier in life. After a miscarriage it is essential to consult the doctor and get the best health advice on getting pregnant.
