Most Dangerous Cities in Alabama

1. Birmingham

The largest city in Alabama, Birmingham is also one of the most dangerous. In 2019, there were a total of 1,857 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, making it the second most dangerous city in the state. Property crimes are also a problem in Birmingham, with a rate of 7,772 per 100,000 residents.

2. Huntsville

The second largest city in Alabama, Huntsville has a violent crime rate of 1,647 per 100,000 residents. That's slightly lower than Birmingham's rate, but Huntsville's property crime rate is higher, at 8,692 per 100,000 residents. This makes Huntsville the most dangerous city in Alabama for property crimes.

3. Mobile

Mobile is Alabama's third largest city, and it has a violent crime rate of 1,376 per 100,000 residents. That's lower than both Birmingham and Huntsville, but Mobile's property crime rate is still high, at 7,885 per 100,000 residents.

4. Montgomery

Montgomery is the fourth most populous city in Alabama and it has a violent crime rate of 1,357 per 100,000 residents—slightly lower than Mobile's rate. However, Montgomery's property crime rate is much higher than Mobile's—in fact, it's the second highest in the state at 8,460 per 100k residents.

5. Tuscaloosa

Rounding out the top five is Tuscaloosa with a violent crime rate of 1,240 per 100k residents—the lowest of any city on this list. However, its property crime rate is still quite high at 7648 per 100k residents—the fifth highest in Alabama.
