The number of car accidents in the United States has been on the rise for years. It's because there are more cars on the road, which means more chances of an accident. In fact, according to AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety data from 2017 (the most recent year available), there were approximately 35 million car crashes per year—that's one every two seconds. This is also the reason why there are thousands of car accident claims filed annually to recover financial compensation. When filing a car accident claim, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First of all, if you are injured, do not drive yourself anywhere until the doctor has assessed your injuries; second, hire a lawyer; and third, never discuss any details of your case with anyone except the insurance company.
There are some common car accident scenarios that you should look out for when driving.
Run Off the Road
Run-off road crashes are a common type of car accident, and they happen most often in the winter months. The most common cause is driver error. Drivers who drive too fast for their conditions or choose to travel at night without using headlights have a higher likelihood of getting into an accident on ice or snow-covered roads.
When it comes to weather conditions that can cause run-off road crashes, ice is at the top of the list because it increases traction between tires and roadway surfaces while limiting visibility due to its reflective nature. Snow can also make driving difficult due to poor traction (especially when there's an accumulation), which makes these crashes even more prevalent during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing point outside but remain constant inside your vehicle's cabin.
Rear End Collision
A rear-end collision is one of the most common types of car collisions. In this situation, a vehicle is driving in reverse and collides with another vehicle that is moving forward. The resulting collision can cause serious injuries to both drivers and passengers involved in the accident.
While it may seem like there are few ways to avoid getting into an accident like this one, there are several things you can do before your car comes into contact with another vehicle:
- Make sure your mirrors are adjusted correctly before getting behind the wheel; if they're not adjusted properly, then you could end up hitting another car.
- Make sure to keep a safe distance when driving in poor visibility. As it could result in a pile-up on a highway.
- Make sure to use backlights and other indicators to ensure the vehicle in the front or the back understands your intentions.
Sideswipe Collisions
Sideswipe collisions are another common car accident scenario. The cause of sideswipe collisions is often due to excessive speed or following too closely. When two cars approach one another too quickly, they can experience a total loss of control and crash into each other side by side. Sideswipes generally occur when one vehicle crosses over into the opposite lane without stopping first, then continues until it impacts with your car's front bumper on its right side (or left) if you're facing forward—to illustrate: imagine driving on a highway; now imagine that instead of using your turn signal when changing lanes/direction, you just keep moving straight ahead without slowing down or signaling anything at all. This scenario would result in what's called a full-width "sideswipe" because both vehicles were traveling at high speeds when they collided head-on with each other's fenders in unison instead of going around each other where both cars could have avoided hitting by just turning slightly left.
It’s easy to see how these accidents can happen. It's important, however, that you do your part to prevent them. The best way to reduce the chance of these types of accidents happening is by being attentive and making sure that you are always driving appropriately for conditions at all times.
