Improving Your Sales This Year

January 20, 2023

If you work in sales, you undoubtedly always have a general goal to improve. Without regular and persistent growth, it's difficult to consistently meet quotas and perform well at work. As the new year and new fiscal quarters roll around, now is the time to focus on improving your sales game. If your current strategy isn't working well, or you're simply unsure of how you can get better, here are a few tips to get you started.

Have a Plan

The first step to improving your sales game is to have a plan. If you're just going into the year blind, it'll be difficult to get better as the year goes on. Your sales plan should include a clearly defined goal first and foremost. Are you focusing on volume this year? Do you want greater client retention? Do you want to boost your numbers with the clients you currently have? Answering these questions will help you start the planning process.

Once you have a broad goal, break it down into specifics. What is the best way to achieve that? If you're going for volume, do you have leads already in place? If you're building client relationships, how are you going to improve communication and trust between you and your customers? The specific steps should be achievable and realistic; don't set something that you could only accomplish in a perfect world. By creating a sales plan for the year, you can improve your selling strategy and impress your bosses.

Improve Client Communication

Second, you should work on improving client communication. If you can't talk to your clients effectively, your numbers won't increase. Talking to your customers is one of the most vital facets of sales. Without clear and open lines of communication, your clients won't be able to know what's going on, contact you for more orders, or reach out with feedback. Additionally, poor communication will lead to a lower satisfaction standard between your business and your customers, potentially losing you the sale.

Rather than risking the success of the sale, focus on opening contact between you and your clients. Get to know them beyond just how much product they order and who they work for. If you can find out little details about your customers' lives, such as their names and whether or not they have kids, you can make a personal connection that will help you push sales easier. When you talk to your clients like people rather than numbers, you'll have a head start on improving your sales numbers for the year.

Do Your Research

The final way to improve your sales strategy is to do your research. With any job, research and foreknowledge are important to your success. Working in sales is no different. If you don't know who you're selling to, it'll be far more difficult than necessary to make the sale effectively on your first try. While it's not impossible to make sales with little preparation, your job will be infinitely easier if you know who you'll be talking to beforehand. Before you make contact with a client, look up who they are and a bit about their company history. If there's any information about their personal history, you may be able to use that in your sales strategy.

Similarly, you should know the details of what it is you're selling. If you don't know the specifications of your product, you won't be able to make an effective sale. While you may be able to direct a client to a coworker to answer questions, that will only cause frustration and potentially harm your sale. By knowing everything you can about your product and potential clients, you can improve your sales numbers this year.

Overall, there are multiple methods in which you can improve your sales strategy. Whether you're going for volume or retention, these three tips will give you a head start on pumping up your yearly numbers.
