Places You Can Get Propane

January 12, 2023

Whether you use propane for heating your home, outdoor cooking, or running your RV, your propane tank won't last forever. While propane is a popular and effective source of energy, it is only available in certain places. Here is a guide to finding refills from a propane supplier.

Where Can You Get Propane?

There are many places where you can find propane refills. A propane supplier may have a nearby propane gas station that will refill the tanks you bring to them. They will also take your old tanks and sell you new ones. Propane suppliers also supply to the following businesses that sell to consumers:

  • Gas stations and travel stops
  • Local farm and ranch stores
  • Campgrounds
  • Large retail establishments and hardware

Gas Stations and Travel Stops

Travel stops are popular locations to fill your RV's propane tank. Most of these stops are large enough to accommodate large trucks. Some gas stations may have signs stating they refill at least 6 gallons of propane. If this is the case, you must bring a tank that is large enough to hold this amount— if you come with a small tank, they will still charge you the price of 6 gallons of propane.

Local Farm and Ranch Shops

Some local retailers in suburban and rural areas will offer propane refills. Call in advance if you plan to fill up here; not all locations will refill propane. You might need to wait for a trained propane-filling store employee to become available.

If the area is a popular RV stop the need for propane will be greater, and finding a refill location should be easier. Avoid going for your refill in the evenings or on weekends, as most of these shops may be closed. If you see a propane fill station with limited activity, you can find help from attendants inside or look for instructions on the signage.

Campgrounds

Some campgrounds have stations for filling up the propane. It can be more expensive, but propane is made available for campers needing refills far away from establishments in towns. Find out from the campground offices or websites if there are times when the ranger refills propane or if you can drop by designated locations whenever you like.

This is also a viable option if you are in transit. Even if you don't plan on staying at the campground, campgrounds with propane available will still sell to you.

Large Retail Establishments and Hardware Stores

At large retail places like Lowe's, Home Depot, and other supermarket chains, you can exchange your empty tank for a filled one. Some gas stations and hardware stores also provide this option. Although tank swapping is a practical option, it is more expensive. It is typical for the tank to be partially filled to allow for expansion. If there's any propane left in your tank, you will not get compensation for it.

How Can You Find Propane Locations Near You?

Many retailers offer propane refills or tank exchanges, but you shouldn't have to waste time guessing which ones have it. The best way to find propane locations near you is on the internet. You can use the following options:

Google Search

Enter "propane tank refill in location" into Google Maps to find locations nearby that offer this service. Scan through the locations that pop up before choosing a location that serves your needs. You will also find contact information for the businesses in case you have any questions.

FreeRoam

FreeRoam provides a map of the United States indicating locations where you can refill your RV's propane tank.

Park Advisor

Download the Park Advisor app to help you find propane refill locations. There are also other RV apps and GPS navigation tools that can be useful. Try them out and choose whichever works for you.

Any tank older than 12 years must be recertified for continued use under federal law. A propane supplier can perform recertification, although this could cost as much as a new tank.

Are You Looking for A Propane Supplier Near You?

Propane is a resource that you don't want to run out of. You can find a reliable propane supplier near you for residential refills, traveler or camping needs, or even for your business.
