Determine the Best Fencing Type by Asking Yourself These 5 Questions

February 21, 2023

Homeowners that have yards without fences might reach a point where they want to enclose their property. Putting up a fence around the front or backyard can create a safe space where your kids and pets can run around. You won’t have to worry about them running out into the street.

If you’re looking for great fencing contractors, Hawaii has more than a few. Before contacting them, you should determine the ideal fencing type for your situation. You can do that by asking yourself the following questions.

How Much Money Do I Have?

Looking at how much money you have will be the most crucial factor when thinking about what kind of fence to get. If you want one of the fanciest fence varieties but don’t have the money to afford it, that is going to change your selection.

You might not like the prospect of getting a cheaper fence, but if that’s all you can afford, you have little alternative unless you want to pay for the fence by financing it.

Am I Buying This Fence to Improve My Home’s Resale Value?

You might also buy the fence with your home’s resale value in mind. If you get a fancier fence, it’s going to cost you more now, but you might be able to command a higher asking price if you ever decide to leave that house.

Think about whether you plan to move on from that house in the near future. If so, paying a little more for a high-end fence might be worth it.

Do I Want My Fence to Match My Neighbor’s Fence?

Some people like uniformity. If your neighbor already has a fence next door surrounding their yard, do you want to install one that matches theirs? If you don’t care about that sort of thing, you can ignore what your neighbor did and install a fence made of different materials.

Do I Want Extra Privacy?

Some fences afford you more privacy than others. For instance, if you get a chain link fence, passing drivers and pedestrians can easily see what’s going on in your yard.

If you’re getting a fence around your backyard, and you like sunbathing while wearing scanty clothing, you might get a fence that offers you more privacy. Something like a wooden stockade-style fence that offers limited visibility from the outside might be in order.

Will the Climate Make a Difference?

In some regions, you must think about what impact the weather will have on your fence. Maybe you’re getting a wooden fence, and you’re trying to decide whether to get treated wood and what kind of lumber will work best.

If so, consider how cold it gets in the winter where you live. Some lumber types will not do as well in cold climates. The wood may crack and warp before too long. You should consider this and get the appropriate kind of lumber.

By answering these questions, you can get the fencing material that works best for your situation.
