Brookfield Zoo
Brookfield Zoo is the perfect destination for families looking to spend a day exploring the wilds of the world. The 216-acre zoo features 25 major animal exhibits that recreate the animals’ natural habitats in innovative walk-through settings.
One of the zoo’s most popular attractions is the indoor rain forest simulation, where animals live in a tropical environment that simulates their natural habitats. Other popular attractions include The Living Coast, which has transparent water walls and a squishy blue floor to mimic ocean depths; Tropic World, which recreates a rain forest with thunder rumbles; and Dolphin in Action, which offers daily dolphin shows for an extra fee.
A narrated motor safari is also available to tour the zoo and learn about the zoological society’s conservation efforts. You can also attend the Twilight Tunes concert series each Friday and Saturday in July, featuring music from a variety of genres on the East Mall.
Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve
Located just 20 minutes south of Oak Brook, Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is one of the best hiking spots near Chicago. The 2,503-acre preserve features Rocky Glen waterfall, a Sawmill Creek bluff overlook and extensive trails.
It is home to a variety of habitats, including prairies, savannas, wetlands, waterfalls and oak-maple woodlands. These landscapes support more than 300 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles.
The forest preserve has an expansive nature center that features an indoor and outdoor playground, animal exhibits and a variety of educational programs. The facility also hosts a monthly "Mother Nature and Me" program where children between the ages of 3 and 5 can learn about nature through fun activities and field trips.
The preserve has 12 miles of trails that are open to hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. It also offers fishing, an orienteering course and youth group campground.
