How To Keep Your Home Bug Free During The Warmer Months

February 3, 2023

Nothing ruins a perfect summer day quicker than a swarm of creepy, crawly, multi-legged bugs being where they shouldn’t be. Let’s face it, Australia has a lot of insects and bugs, and if you don’t do something to protect yourself from them, such as a Clearshield retractable flyscreen, you can be sure that you will be fighting a losing battle forevermore. Insects can easily get inside your home without you realising it until it’s too late, so it really is worth your while to put systems in place to keep your home protected.

Depending on where you are in the country, the types of bugs and insects that you have to deal with may change, but keeping them out will almost always require you to take similar steps. Now is the time to get your home prepared and ready for the oncoming swarm that often comes with the warm months. There are countless things that can be done to keep you and your home protected from insects, it’s often just a matter of deciding where to start.

Continue reading below to learn how you can protect your home from a bug infestation this summer.

Do A General Inspection

The first thing you need to do is to take a look around the entirety of your home, paying special care to note any obvious signs that there may be an existing problem. Putting in all of the work to keep bugs out of your home, only to find you already had an existing bug problem, would be a big waste of time and resources, so make sure you take the time to ensure your home is bug-free to begin.

Fill Cracks And Other Damage

During your initial walkaround to ensure bugs aren’t already getting into your home, you will also want to keep your eyes open for cracks and other damage to the house and foundation. Bugs need just the tiniest of spaces to start an infestation, and a tiny crack in the side of your foundation is exactly the space they are looking for. Take the time to ensure you find everything that is clearly visible, as missing anything may end up costing you in the long run. If you are concerned, you can always get a professional to take a look to make sure everything looks filled and secure.

Replace Or Repair Window And Door Screens

Most homeowners will automatically replace or repair a screen when there is obvious damage or holes in it. However, what about the damage that you don’t see immediately? Since those tiny little insects can get in anywhere, it is important to check the corners and edges of the screens, as they can hide damage easier. You may also want to look into extra screening for the warmer months, as many companies make them specifically for deterring bugs and insects.

Seal Everything That Can Be Sealed

Numerous places in your home use some form of seal to ensure that the outside doesn’t come inside, and these things can deteriorate over time. All of your doors should completely seal from the outside, a lot of the time with visible weatherstripping, but sometimes it is more difficult to see what is used. Check all of your doors to see that they are fully sealed, as insects will have a field day if they aren’t.

You will also want to check all of your plumbing that is routed outside, as the pipes should have sealant around them to ensure nothing else gets in. This sealant needs to be reapplied over time, so inspect and repair where needed.

Keep Your Waste Secured

It may smell, and it may be disgusting, but securing your waste throughout the hot months is an important step in keeping the bugs away. An outdoor bin, away from the home, is a great way to go, especially if it is fully sealed and secure. If that isn’t an option, do your best to get rid of any garbage as quickly as you can, and keep it in a spot that won’t bring bugs closer to your home.

Invite Some Guests

The great thing about nature is that everything ultimately feeds on everything else so use nature to your advantage by allowing the right animals, birds and bigger insects into your garden. Look into what insect predators are commonplace in your area, and do what you can to create an inviting home for them. If all of those troublesome pests get eaten, there will be nothing left to infest your home.

Consistency Is Key To Keeping Your Home Bug-Free

Preparing for the warmer months is not a one-time thing, it is something that you must keep up with each year on a consistent basis. The more often you take the time to check on all of the tasks we mentioned above, the less work you will have to do overall, as you will be confident that your home is fully maintained throughout the year. A bug infestation can cause untold damage to a home, not to mention the health risks, and it is on you, the homeowner, to make sure you are protected. Keep those insects outside where they belong, and you can enjoy your summer either inside or out.
