It is said that the journey is more important than the destination. When it comes to retirement, it seems to take longer and longer these days. Besides the financial aspect of retirement, one needs to plan for what they are going to do with their newly found time off work. Many people enjoy an active adult community and find their purpose in something like volunteering or spending time with family.
Here are a few ways to reward yourself for reaching retirement age and your goals:
Continue Earning
Currently, with the increased cost of living, it is important to continue to earn money, even when you are retired and won’t be working. This can be done via investment earnings as well as a possible part-time employment. You did not reach retirement alone, and no doubt had investments to help you earn your retirement income. It is important to keep those investments and ways of making an income to support your retirement. You may also find that a part-time job can be both financially rewarding, as well as giving you something to look forward to each day.
New Projects
When you take on a new project, perhaps a part-time job, you are helping to continue your purpose. When you got up each morning to go to work, you had a purpose, even if you did not enjoy your job. Now that you are retired, you have to opportunity to do what you want to do, what will make you happy as well as an income. Even at retirement age, there are people who do not know what they want to be when they grow up. You may find what you will enjoy by taking a personality test or a type of “life enjoyment” test. This can help you sort out what you would enjoy doing for the remainder of your active life.
Volunteering
Another option is to volunteer wherever there is a need. This can go hand in hand with what you enjoy. If you enjoy working with animals, you may contact your local Humane Society to volunteer to help with the animals that need care. This could include walking dogs, cuddling cats, feeding, bathing, and simply spending time with the pets that are in kennels most of the day.
Another option for volunteering is at local hospitals. They are always in need of people to help escort visitors and out-patients to their destinations. In addition to these types of jobs, there is a great need for people to hold newborn babies. These can be babies with health issues, or simply babies that do not have any family to help with their care.
Tutoring
Another possible skill sharing position is tutoring. Taking what you know, your years of work experience, and helping younger people to gain the needed skills to succeed in the workforce and beyond. Tutoring young children in school, the junior achievement, and at the local library, can give you purpose as well as be a great help to your community.
Looking past sitting on the porch or going fishing during your retirement is a celebration of your life well-lived and sharing your experiences with your community. Staying active will help you feel better about yourself and retirement.
