Gran Canaria is a stunning Spanish island located in the Canaries, just west of Africa. Many heads there in the winter for its year-round warm weather, whilst some digital nomads enjoy the low cost of living. Here are 9 things to know when moving to Gran Canaria:

Housing

There is a wide range of housing options available in Gran Canaria, from apartments to villas. Villas in Gran Canaria are affordable, though it may be worth purchasing a home if you're staying long-term. This way, you can rent it out to holidaymakers whenever you're not around - Gran Canaria will always be a popular holiday destination.

 

Language

Being a Spanish island, the official language in Gran Canaria is of course Spanish. If you reside in the capital, which is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, most waiters and residents will speak some English. However, if you’re going to explore the rest of the island, it’s a good idea to learn basic Spanish. Well, it’s a good idea regardless of where you live if you want to mix well with the locals.

 

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Gran Canaria is relatively low compared to many other European countries and the US. This means that you can enjoy a high standard of living without breaking the bank. Furthermore, eating out and socializing is important to Spanish culture, so put some money aside for this.

 

Weather

The weather in Gran Canaria is warm and sunny all year round, with average temperatures ranging from 20 °C in winter to 28 °C in summer. This makes it a great destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities and sunshine.

 

Healthcare

Gran Canaria has a good healthcare system, with both public and private hospitals available. If you're an EU citizen, you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to receive free or reduced-cost medical treatment.

 

Transportation

Gran Canaria has a good public transportation system, with buses and taxis available. It may be an island, but it’s not exactly walkable from one side to the other. However, if you plan on staying for a longer period of time, it's a good idea to purchase a car, as this will make it easier to visit more remote places.

Gran Canaria is a welcoming and friendly place, with a large expat community. There are several expat groups and events, such as sports clubs and language exchanges, where you can meet new people and make friends. In fact, there are older retiree communities, but also a booming younger digital nomad community - there are even co-working spaces too.
