Painting your home - whether it's a bedroom, the entire interior, or even exterior walls - requires careful planning to ensure you don't end up wasting money by buying too much paint. To help make sure that doesn’t happen, it's important to know how many cans of paint will be needed.
Here are some tips on calculating this accurately.
Measuring the Paintable Surface Area
To prepare for a painting project, it's important to calculate the total surface area of your room. Start by measuring the length and height of all walls. Adding them together will give you the perimeter. Then, multiply that number by wall height. Voila! You now have an approximation of how much paintable space you'll be working with in square meters (m2).
In our example above, where we had a 12-meter long x 2-meter high room, we calculated 24 m2 as our total wall width. But don't forget about doors and windows! Subtract 1.9 m² from each door within those dimensions, plus another 1.4 per window. This will give you even more accurate results when it comes to calculating exactly which areas need freshening up before the painting process begins.
How Much Paint to Buy
When it's time to give your walls a fresh coat of paint, you may be wondering exactly how much paint is needed for the job. By following this simple formula - dividing the total wall space by 6.5 - you can calculate just how many liters of paint are necessary! For example, 19.3 square meters requires almost 3 liters when rounded up. Make sure there's enough on hand and enjoy your newly spruced-up home in no time at all!
Other Considerations
When it comes to painting, there are a few extra details you need to keep in mind. Repainting an existing wall will require less paint than if you're coating brand new drywall - even with primer. Also, consider the color of your paint; warm hues and dark shades may necessitate using tinted primer underneath for optimal coverage. Finally, bear in mind that future touch-ups may be needed down the line. So, add some wiggle room by rounding up on how much material is required!
