Sitting on the Red River opposite Shreveport, Bossier City is the second-highest population city in the Shreveport-Bossier metropolitan area. This Louisiana city is known for casinos and gambling, but there's much more to it than that!

The area has a thriving food culture and is a popular shopping destination for locals. You'll find outlets and factory stores for Nike, Levi's, Under Armour, Kay Jewelers to name a few.

1. Red River National Wildlife Refuge

Red River National Wildlife Refuge is a nature conservation area with a visitor center and opportunities for hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing. Located in Bossier City, it's a great place to spend the day with family and friends.

This refuge is comprised of several units in northwestern Louisiana and provides habitat for waterfowl, wading birds and songbirds. The Visitor Center, Headquarters Offices and Education Center opened in January 2012.

The Refuge's 12,000 acres include uplands with wetlands that are actively managed by refuge staff. They provide a diverse habitat for migratory birds, wildflowers, prairie grasses, and cypress sloughs.

2. East Bank District

The East Bank District is a bustling entertainment and dining district on Barksdale Boulevard. It’s a great place to have a night out with family and friends.

When the city began its revitalization process in 2014, it was determined that the area needed a fresh face and new identity. Ultimately, it was decided that upgrading public infrastructure would spur private investment and attract businesses to the area.

The district has already seen a growth of small businesses that are proud to be a part of the synergy that is taking place in this newly renovated area. Several restaurants, including the first craft brewery in Bossier City, have opened in the district.

3. Pierre Bossier Mall

Pierre Bossier Mall is a single-level, enclosed regional shopping center located in the city of Bossier City. The mall is anchored by Dillard’s and JC Penney.

The mall has over 600,000 square feet of retail space. It is arguably the most identifiable and accessible center in the Shreveport/Bossier market as it sits right off of Interstate 20.

It is also home to a variety of dining options and activities. On Saturdays, the Bossier City Farmers Market takes over the south parking lot of the mall and features over 75 vendors with super-fresh seasonal produce, jams, jellies, honey, sauces, spices, flowers, baked goods, tamales, kettle corn, southern comfort food, wood and metal crafts, art and tons more.

The Bossier City Makers Fair is a celebration of handmade makers and vendors, featuring 4 separate large groups of all handcrafted artisans. It includes pottery, stained glass, knitting, art, upcycled furniture, soap, jewelry, clothing and more.

4. Flying Heart Brewery

The brewery features a brick-oven pizza, several flagship beers, limited edition seasonal offerings, and a cocktail menu.

It also boasts one of the most impressive craft beer tasting rooms in the area, with a plethora of fun and interesting brews on tap. The best part is that it's all available to enjoy indoors or out!

A visit to Flying Heart is an experience like no other. With a dedicated team of staff who are renowned for their expertise, you're sure to have the time of your life. The brewery even has a handful of interactive attractions, including an augmented reality simulator that lets you explore the inside of their massive brewing system. To make your visit a little more enjoyable, take advantage of the free perks and deals that they offer to their customers.

5. Louisiana Downs

Located in Bossier City, Louisiana Downs is a horse racing track and racino. It opened in 1974 with 15,000 fans in attendance for the first day of its inaugural meet.

It is owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment. It is a showcase for horses from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas.

The racetrack has a Thoroughbred meet that runs from May through September and a Quarter Horse meet that takes place in January through March. It is home to the Super Derby, which is one of the premier races for three-year-olds in North America.

Since it was purchased by Rubico Acquisition Corp in November 2021, it has gone through a number of changes and improvement projects. It is preparing for the 2022 live thoroughbred racing season, which begins on May 7.
