If you want to explore a few trails while in Chesterfield, the Monarch-Chesterfield Levee Trail is worth checking out. The trail takes you by the Missouri River and offers numerous outdoor activities and attractions.

This 3.3-mile long trail features restviewing areas and access ramps at both Boone Bridge and Baxter Road locations. KdG traffic engineers also designed signal modifications at the intersection where the trail crosses Interstate 40/64 and over Bonhomme Creek.

Whether you’re a bicyclist, walker, hiker, nature lover or history buff, the Katy Trail State Park has something for everyone. It’s built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad nicknamed “KATY.”

The 240-mile-long trail winds between Clinton and Machens, and features 26 trailheads and four fully restored railroad depots. It also takes you through some of the most scenic areas of Missouri as it closely follows the Missouri River.

The trail is a wonderful way to take in Missouri’s landscape, including limestone bluffs, sweeping river bottom farms, woodlands and historic railroad towns. There’s also a variety of wildlife to watch along the way.

One of the most popular is the Butterfly House, where more than 1,000 butterflies fly freely in a glass conservatory. The park also hosts summer concerts, fall hayrides and holiday events.

Another attraction at the park is Faust Historic Village, which features 16 structures and four homes showcasing building and architectural styles from 1840 to 1910. Its purpose is to preserve vernacular architecture and illustrate differences in lifestyle throughout St. Louis County during that period.

The 8,000-square-foot conservatory is lushly planted with exotic flowering tropical plants and features a chrysalis exhibit that allows visitors to witness the miraculous metamorphosis of butterflies in a natural setting.

Spend a summer evening searching for fireflies during the annual Butterfly House Firefly Festival. This celebration returns on June 11, 18, and 25 and costs $12 for the general public.

The Butterfly House offers a variety of indoor and outdoor venues for weddings, corporate events and other special occasions. The Monsanto Pavillion, Emerson Lakeside Terrace and the Butterfly Garden Deck in the outdoor garden offer the perfect backdrop for ceremonies.
