Whether you’re looking for family fun, shopping, historic sites or adventure, Chillicothe has plenty to offer. Here are some of the best things to do in Chillicothe, Ohio!
The city is home to a number of state parks, nature preserves and wildlife areas. It’s also a great place to explore some of the State’s best-preserved Indian earthworks.
1. Great Seal State Park
If you’re looking to get out and enjoy some great outdoor activities, Great Seal State Park is a must-visit destination in Chillicothe. It offers a variety of activities for all ages, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, disc golf, and nature study.
The sandstone hills that make up the park are part of Ohio’s midsection where glaciated plains meet rugged mountains and the Appalachian Plateau. On a clear day, visitors can see Columbus to the north and unbroken forested ridges to the south.
Aside from its many hiking trails, the park also has a campground. Pets are welcome at the park as long as they are kept on a 6-foot leash.
2. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park preserves the prehistoric remains of a dynamic social and ceremonial phenomenon that flourished in southern Ohio’s woodlands between 200 BC and AD 500. Its nationally significant archeological resources include large earthwork and mound complexes that provide insight into the social, ceremonial, political, and economic life of the Hopewell people.
Visit the park’s five earthwork sites to learn about a fascinating Native American culture. Next, head to the Mound City Group to see reconstructed mounds of various sizes and shapes.
3. Adena Mansion and Gardens Historic Site
Adena Mansion and Gardens Historic Site is a museum and garden that offers history lovers a glimpse into the lives of early Ohio citizens. It is the former home of Thomas Worthington, known as “The Father of Ohio Statehood,” and his wife Eleanor Swearingen.
The mansion was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who served as architect of the US Capitol and White House under Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Situated on 300 acres are five outbuildings and formal gardens that have undergone major renovations.
Looking east from the north lawn, visitors can see across the Scioto River Valley to the Logan Range. This vista is the inspiration for the Great Seal of Ohio.
