Whether you’re on a road trip or just looking for something to do in the south, Dothan is a must-see destination. This small town with warm hospitality is a perfect place to relax and enjoy.
Located in the Wiregrass region, Dothan is home to several unique attractions. Some of them are free to visit!
Adventureland Theme Park
Adventureland Theme Park has been a favorite for families since 1962. It offers a variety of attractions and activities, including several roller coasters, midway games, water rides, an arcade, mini golf course, a sit-down restaurant, and a snack bar.
While some amusement parks are known for a high price tag, you’ll find that it’s not the case at Adventureland. Currently, adults pay $10 less than kids for an adult admission ticket.
The park offers many fun rides, such as the Turbulence and Rattlesnake roller coasters, Frisbee, and Mystery Mansion. It also has a number of kiddie rides, including the Wave Swing and Balloon Ferris Wheel.
Water World
Water World offers many fun activities and attractions for the whole family. It has a giant wave pool, triple-flume slides, kiddie pool, souvenir shop and mouth-watering concessions.
It also has a large carpeted beach area for people looking to relax while they enjoy some fun in the sun. This park is open year round.
It's home to the Rip Tide Wave pool, which contains 450,000 gallons of crystal clear water that bursts into 3-foot waves every 10 minutes. It also has the Storm Bowl (where riders plummet down a body slide and "spin into the eye of the storm"), and the Twister slides: three body slides -- a speed slide, closed-flume slide and open-flume slide — off a 40-foot tower.
Landmark Park
Whether you want to take the family on a nature hike, explore a dinosaur kingdom or go on a dinghy ride, Landmark Park has something for everyone! Its friendly staff will make sure your kids have a fun and safe time.
The park is also home to a number of events throughout the year, including Spring Farm Day and Fall Farm Day. Visitors can witness live farm animals and see reenactments of traditional farming methods.
Located about half a block from the center of town, this park features paved walks and a gazebo. It also has the Stokes Activity Barn, which can be rented for weddings and other gatherings.
Murals of the Wiregrass
Located in Dothan, the Wiregrass Museum of Art offers a vast array of exhibits, permanent collections, and educational programs. This southeastern Alabama museum is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in art.
The museum features five galleries dedicated to contemporary and regional art, as well as a fountain garden area. The Wiregrass Museum of Art also offers artist talks, workshops, and family activities.
Another permanent exhibit, “Social Progress Heroes,” highlights eminent African-Americans who have contributed to the development of America. This includes famous inventors such as Elijah H. McCoy.
The city of Dothan is also home to the Southern Heirloom Botanical Gardens, a 50-acre complex that has nature trails, cultivated gardens, and preserved wilderness areas. The gardens also have boardwalks, statues, and water fountains.
Peanut Art
Dothan, a small city in southeastern Alabama, is nicknamed the "Peanut Capital of the World." The region around Dothan supplies approximately one-fourth of the country's peanut crop.
The area is also home to the National Peanut Festival, which draws thousands of visitors each fall. The two-week event features entertainment, exhibits, rides and attractions for people of all ages.
Another fun activity in Dothan is a public art project called “Peanuts Around Town.” Originally created by The Downtown Group, these fiberglass peanuts are painted by local artists and scattered across the city to commemorate its famed peanut industry.
If you like a good treasure hunt, be sure to pick up a map at the Dothan Visitors Center and search for the 50-plus four-foot peanuts. They include a variety of characters, such as the Elvis Nut, the Violin Nut, and the Flamingo Nut.
