things to do in east lansing

East Lansing is a beautiful city bustling with several recreational attractions. Its attractions range from art displays to educational features and game centers to excellent restaurants.

The city is home to many museums that provide a variety of information about the past and present of Michigan and its people. It also has a few great parks that are perfect for spending time with the family.

Potter Park Zoo

With more than 160 species of animals, the zoo at Potter Park is an animal-tastic experience for kids. You can see African Lions, Amur Tigers, Barn Owls, Black Rhinos, Mandrills and so much more!

Zoo keeper talks are also a great way to learn about the animals you see. Check the zoo's website for current events and schedules.

The zoo also has plenty of activities for the entire family including pony rides and petting zoo. The farmyard edventures area features goats, burros, cows, chickens and pigs.

MSU Museum

Located on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, the MSU Museum is the first Smithsonian Affiliate in Michigan and a public steward for nearly a million artifacts. Its exhibits span anthropology, natural science, folk arts and history.

The museum is a must-see for Spartan fans, and even those who aren’t. Take a tour of the earliest established museum in the country or visit the permanent exhibits like life-sized habitat dioramas and a gallery that features dinosaur fossils.

For more arts and entertainment, check out the Zaha Hadid-designed Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, which is a contemporary art space that welcomes everyone to see groundbreaking international artwork. Or, catch a show at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, an East Lansing favorite that offers Broadway, jazz, and dance performances.

All Around the African World Museum

A great museum right off the zoo, All Around the African World Museum celebrates African global influences in art and culture. The Museum offers guided tours by appointment.

East Lansing is home to the MSU campus, which has many fun things to do for students. The city is also known for its Beaumont Tower, a historic structure that houses a carillon.

The MSU Museum displays pictures, artifacts and printed material displaying the presence of African people on inhabited continents. The museum is free to visit but donations are appreciated.

The MSU Museum’s collection of African art and artifacts has grown significantly over the years thanks to donations from scholars. Its current exhibit, “African Connections,” reflects the growth of this impressive collection.

Lansing River Trail

The Lansing River Trail stretches over 13 miles, connecting comfortable parks, historic sites and urban activity centers across East Lansing. It’s an easy way to see the city and enjoy a wide variety of things to do while you’re here.

The main section of the Lansing River Trail runs east along the Red Cedar River from Crego Park to Old Town. It then continues south around Hawk Island Park to South Waverly Road.

The river is lined with waterfront parks and is home to many events, including the Common Ground Music Festival and Annual Mayor’s Walk. It also offers a chance to explore the Potter Park Zoo and MSU campus.

Crego Park

Crego Park is a fun place for the whole family. It has a huge three-story playground, a pond, and even a snack shop!

You can also go for a walk along the Red Cedar River in this park, which is perfect for nature lovers. This park is located near a 4.5-mile paved path, which allows you to go hiking, jogging, biking, rollerblading, and bird watching!

You can also visit a horticulture garden, which is free to enter. This garden is located on the Michigan State University campus and features a landscape arboretum of perennials, shrubs, trees, and new annuals.
