things to do in huntsville tx

Huntsville is a small town that offers so much to visitors. From history to art, there is so much to explore here.

One of the best things to do in Huntsville is to visit Sam Houston’s homestead. It’s a great way to learn about Texas’ early years.

Sam Houston Statue

The Sam Houston Statue is one of the most recognizable monuments in huntsville tx. It towers 77 feet over IH 45 and the surrounding pine-clad countryside.

The statue was constructed to honor General Sam Houston, a legendary military leader who helped Texas win its independence. His victory at San Jacinto secured Texas’ independence from Mexico in 1836.

Artist David Adickes was born and raised in Huntsville, so he drew inspiration from the city’s past to create this colossal monument. It was dedicated October 22, 1994.

Adickes was not sure he could accomplish this project, but it took him three years to complete the 67-foot-tall concrete and steel colossus that stands as a testament to courage.

The statue is located on Interstate 45 south of town, a nexus for visitors who want to see more of the area’s oddities. Huntsville is also home to a Texas Prison Museum, the site of Old Sparky the electric chair and cemeteries where unclaimed inmates are buried.

H.E.A.R.T. Veteran’s Museum of Texas

A visit to this museum is a must for any veteran. It is a nonprofit history museum with military artifacts & memorabilia, equipment & guided tours.

Its roots go back to 1993 when a local vet, Charlotte Oleinik, created a window display honoring veterans at the Blue Bonnet Antiques shop. This grew into a traveling school exhibit and eventually a permanent museum home.

The museum’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is an 80% replica of the original memorial in Washington, D.C. The 370-foot wall contains 58,263 names of American veterans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

Aside from the wall, there are also several displays of military equipment. Some of the more noteworthy displays include a WWII Jeep, a World War II UH-1 Huey helicopter, and a Vietnam-era river patrol boat. There is also a room dedicated to women in service, and a holocaust exhibit.

Huntsville State Park

Huntsville State Park is a 2083.2-acre recreational area located six miles southwest of Huntsville in Walker County. It lies within the piney woods of Sam Houston National Forest.

The park was opened in 1938 after it was acquired from private owners. It is a beautiful recreational area that features 21 miles of hiking trails. The park also has a beautiful lake for swimming and fishing.

Another thing that makes this park special is the wildlife. There are over 250 species of birds and animals that make their home here.

There are deer, raccoons, squirrels, and armadillo sitings that are common to see during morning or evening treks.

Huntsville State Park has a variety of activities that include camping, picnicking, hiking, boating, fishing, and geocaching. The park also offers a nature center and ranger programs for visitors.
