If you're planning to visit Lexington, South Carolina, you should definitely add some fun things to do in your itinerary. From shopping escapades to historical tours, there are plenty of activities in this lovely town that will satisfy your needs.
The city is also a haven for nature lovers who would want to commune with flora and fauna. It's also a great place for a family outing.
1. Virginia Hylton Park
A popular destination for families, Virginia Hylton Park is a tree-shaded oasis just behind Town Hall in downtown Lexington. It offers a playground, three covered gazebos, picnic tables, horseshoe pit, and restroom facilities.
The park also features a koi pond, garden and creek with scenic overlooks. It also has a covered stage area that can be rented for events.
For the past 31 years, this park has been a favorite of residents. Mayor Pro-Tem Hazel Livingston says it’s a great place for people to get together and enjoy the outdoors.
Now, the park is getting a $7 million facelift. This includes adding a new entrance on Church Street, a new playground, walking trails, a splash pad and a performance pavilion.
2. Gibson Pond Park
Gibson Pond Park is a charming spot to relax and take in nature. It offers a large covered picnic shelter, a fishing pond with dock, and miles of walking trails.
It has a rich history and was once a site for gristmills, sawmills, and a small cotton mill. Today, it is a great place for families and friends to spend time together while enjoying nature.
The park has recently reopened after being closed for more than a year for construction on a new dam and park renovations. The 2015 historic flood caused a breach in the dam that left the pond empty.
Since then, the town has worked with state and federal agencies to rebuild the dam and bring the park back to life. A new bridge was built this year and the pond will soon be stocked with fish again.
3. Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve
Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve is a great place to spend an afternoon. There are plenty of hiking trails to explore throughout the 450-acre preserve.
It is home to many interesting sandstone rock formations, which give the park its nickname. It also has a waterfall, the only natural waterfall in this area of South Carolina.
You can easily walk to both the waterfall and Peachtree Rock from the parking lot. There are also a few other hiking trails that lead to more interesting areas of the preserve.
However, the main attraction to Peachtree Rock is the giant sandstone rock that once stood for millions of years in an unusual upside-down pyramid fashion. In December 2013, it finally toppled off its base.
4. Dreher Shoals Dam Walk
If you’re looking for a fun outdoor activity, check out the Dreher Shoals Dam Walk. It’s a 1.7-mile paved path across the top of Dreher Shoals Dam and offers beautiful views of Lake Murray.
The dam was built in 1930 and at the time was billed as the largest earthen dam in the world. Today, it is important to the region for flood control, hydroelectric power generation and water supply.
You can take a hike along the 1.7-mile paved pathway, which is open to the public. It offers great views of Lake Murray and even glimpses of downtown Columbia in the distance.
Aside from the 1.7-mile paved path, you can also enjoy a picnic under a covered ramada with an enviable view of Lake Murray. This place is a must-visit if you’re visiting Lexington or the greater Columbia area.
