1. Walk through Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska Street
A walking tour through Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska Street is a great way to experience the heart of Novi Sad. The pedestrian zone is home to a number of important landmarks like Liberty Square (or Trg Slobode in Serbian), Hotel Vojvodina, Bank of Vojvodina and the City Hall.
The square itself is a hub for cultural events, hosting a number of museums and a monument to Svetozar Miletic, a 19th century Serb patriot. It is also where you can find some of the best cafes in the city and many excellent restaurants.
The streets around the square are also full of historical buildings. The Town Hall (1894), the Roman Catholic Church of the Name of Mary (1893-1996), the Synagogue (1909) and many more are all within close proximity.
2. Climb the Drunken Clock
If you want a good view of Novi Sad and the Danube, you should climb to the Drunken Clock at Petrovaradin Fortress. The clock tower, which dominates the Upper Town of the fortress, has a large hand that shows hours and a smaller one that shows minutes.
The tower was built around 1750, and Maria Theresa, Queen of Austria, gave it to Novi Sad as a gift. Unlike the majority of clocks, the hand on this tower was designed to show minutes, instead of hours.
The 'drunk' part of the name comes from the fact that the clock tends to run either slow or fast, depending on the weather conditions. There's an employee who winds the clock manually every day, and at the top of the tower is a weather vane with a heart on it.
3. Go for a Walk on the Danube Waterfront
One of the best things to do in novi is to go for a walk on the Danube Waterfront. This area is full of restaurants, cafes and splavs (floating bars) on both sides of the river.
When you’re there, make sure to check out the Petrovaradin Fortress - it’s one of Europe’s largest C18th fortresses and it’s worth visiting.
After the fortress, you can walk along the waterfront to Zemun. This cute old town has lots of narrow streets and historic buildings.
4. Take a Tour of Petrovaradin Fortress
Nicknamed 'Gibraltar on the Danube', Petrovaradin Fortress is one of Serbia's most important historic cultural assets. Its origins are said to date back to the Stone Age, with the present-day fortress being built over a century after the Austrians captured it during the Great Turkish War.
Today, it is a popular tourist destination that offers visitors a chance to explore its walls as well as its buildings. There are also a number of cafes and artists' studios within the fortress.
The fortress is also home to a maze of underground passageways. A 16-kilometer system of tunnels was created by the Austrians, and you can now take a tour of some of them with an expert guide.
5. Go to Sremski Karlovci
The small town of Sremski Karlovci is located at the foot of Fruska Gora, a mountain that is known for its 17 Orthodox monasteries. It is considered the cultural and religious center of Vojvodina.
A walking tour through Sremski Karlovci is a great way to discover its unique and picturesque Baroque architecture. You will also learn more about the history of this area and taste delicious local wine called bermet.
A guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Belgrade on a full-day private tour. The trip will include visits to Novi Sad, the gorgeous Petrovaradin fortress, baroque Sremski Karlovci and traditional farm house called “Salas”.
