Despite being smaller than the power-house cities in California, Yuba City has lots of things to offer both tourists and locals. It offers different recreational facilities, along with nature trails and outdoor areas.
The town is also steeped in history, and it houses the world’s smallest mountain range. These are some of the most interesting attractions that you can visit when you’re here.
1. Sutter Buttes
The Sutter Buttes are a geologic anomaly and one of the best things to do in Yuba City. They are a brooding cluster of dark rocks that rise over 2,000 feet.
The 1.6 million-year-old volcanic domes were formed when magma pushed upward through the Sacramento Valley sediments. They are a major site of spiritual significance to the indigenous Maidu and Wintun people.
They are a popular attraction and a 200-acre portion of the range is open for guided hikes. Sign up for a tour with Middle Mountain Interpretive Hikes.
2. Bok Kai Temple
One of the oldest Chinese temples in California, Bok Kai Temple is a must-visit during your visit to Yuba City. It’s also home to frescoes that depict scenes of Chinese culture.
This is especially important because most similar frescoes in China were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.
For the past 142 years, Bok Kai Temple has held an annual festival and parade in honor of a Chinese water god called Bok Eye. People come from all over to celebrate the day with lion dancers and a 175-foot dragon snaking through the streets.
3. Mary Aaron Memorial Museum
The Mary Aaron Memorial Museum is a historical Gothic Revival home built in 1855. It was designed by Warren P. Miller, who lived in it until he sold it to the Aaron family in the 1870s.
The museum also features artifacts that document the town’s history. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in local history.
The Sutter Bike Trail is another wonderful place to visit in Yuba City. This scenic bike route is a 9-mile round trip that’s easy to navigate and provides lovely views.
4. Museum of the Forgotten Warriors
Located a little more than a mile from Beale Air Force Base, the Museum of the Forgotten Warriors is definitely the place to go for memorabilia, history and fun stuff for the whole family. Check out the interactive displays to see how these brave men and women lived and died.
While you're there, you can't miss a tour of the West Coast Falconry to see how they're made. You'll also want to check out the Gauche Aquatic Park to cool off on a hot summer day! Be sure to take a spin around Ellis Lake for a truly Instagramable photo op. Lastly, don't forget to pick up one of their souvenirs.
5. Greenwood Park
If you’re a fan of outdoor sports and want to enjoy a day with your family, Greenwood Park is a good place to start. It’s a modest 5.5-acre park that offers two playgrounds separated for younger and older children with swings, slides, climbing structures, and more.
The park also offers a large flat field for baseball, soccer, and other sports. There are plenty of benches and picnic tables for you to sit on, too.
6. Sicillia Vineyards
If you’re a wine lover, you won’t want to miss Sicillia Vineyards. This local winery produces warm-weather Italian varietals from its property near the base of Sutter Buttes.
The island of Sicily is home to some of the most beautiful wines in the world due to its endemic grapes, ancient traditions and UNESCO-listed wine making practices. Sicily also boasts an ideal Mediterranean climate with breezy summers and cool winters that support a range of terroirs.
There are more than 300 producers on the island, each of them creating wines by hand, battling the elements and relying on Mother Nature to make their mark. You can find wines produced from vines at sea level, rolling hills, on mountain sides or even on the slopes of a volcano, Mount Etna.
