3 Ways Artificial Intelligence (AI) Can Hurt Your SEO

March 2, 2023

AI has become an increasingly popular tool for improving search engine optimization (SEO) efforts. With AI, businesses can analyze large volumes of data and gain insights into consumer behaviors and preferences, allowing them to optimize their SEO strategies for maximum impact. However, while AI can be a powerful tool for SEO, it can also have negative effects if not used properly.

With this in mind, let’s take a moment to explore some of the ways in which AI can hurt your SEO efforts.

1. Poor Quality Content

One of the most important factors in SEO is high-quality content. However, some businesses may rely too heavily on AI-generated content, which can result in poor-quality posts that don’t resonate with readers. AI can be useful in generating ideas and providing insights, but it cannot replace the creativity and intuition of a human writer.

AI-generated content can also be limited by the data it’s been trained on. For example, if an AI algorithm has only been trained on a limited set of data or sources, it may produce content that’s repetitive or lacking in diversity. This can easily lead to content that’s formulaic, boring, or irrelevant to your readers.

Another challenge with AI-generated content is that it often lacks the personality and voice human writers bring to their work. If you go this route, you might wind up putting out content that seems sterile, impersonal, or robotic, which can turn off readers and hurt engagement.

2. Inaccurate Data Analysis

AI relies on data to generate insights and improve SEO efforts. However, if the data is inaccurate or incomplete, the insights generated by AI can be misleading or even harmful.

For example, if AI is used to analyze customer feedback and reviews, but the data is skewed by fake reviews or spam, the insights generated by AI can be inaccurate or unreliable.

At the same time, posts that rely heavily on statistics need to use pages that offer current data. Oftentimes, AI pulls from prior years’ information that was once available on the internet, but may no longer be accessible or accurate. For this reason, it’s important to have human writers who can do the digging into the deep holes of digital spaces to find accurate, up-to-date, and relevant statics that speak to the points your brand is trying to make.

3. Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing was once a common SEO tactic that involved adding a large number of keywords to a website or webpage in order to improve its ranking in search results. This is a very out-of-date practice that can cause significant harm to your website, given that Google and other search engines have imposed penalties that greatly discourage the use of keyword stuffing.

With that said, using AI to generate content that’s keyword-stuffed is becoming a strangely common practice among companies that don’t realize the repercussions. AI is known to generate keyword-stuffed pieces, and posting those on your site can be extremely detrimental to your online reputation. Search engines are becoming increasingly sophisticated in detecting keyword stuffing, and sites that use this tactic can be penalized or even banned from search results.

In the End

AI has been known to provide poor-quality content because it lacks the creativity and intuition of human writers, and it may produce repetitive, formulaic, or irrelevant content. These issues can snowball, with the content being written that includes inaccurate data analysis if the data the AI is trained on is incomplete, outdated, or skewed by fake or spam reviews. In the end, AI-generated content can hurt SEO efforts by making the content seem spammy or irrelevant to the people from whom you’re trying to garner attention.
