His parents are Linda (nee Manaly) and William Novak, an author who has ghostwritten memoirs for Lee Iacocca, Magic Johnson, and Nancy Reagan. He is from a Jewish family and attended Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston for elementary and middle school.
He went to Camp Ramah in New England for several summers when he was in 6th, 7th, and 9th grade. He later went to Newton South High School with future The Office costar John Krasinski and graduated in 1997.
After graduating from Harvard University, he moved to Los Angeles where he started working as a stand-up comedian in clubs. He made his first live performance on October 10 2001 at the Hollywood Youth Hostel and was named one of Variety’s “Ten Comedians to Watch” in 2003.
BJ Novak has a wife, Mindy Kaling, and they have two children. Mindy was a regular on BJ’s show The Office, and they met through writing for the show. They dated on and off while writing for The Office, mirroring the on-again, off-again relationship between their characters Ryan Howard and Kelly Kapoor.
