Based on the 12 best-selling novels by Winston Graham, Poldark is a series that has earned itself a fan base for its combination of hard work and romance. Its Cornwall locations have become the heart of the show, with stunning seascapes and rocky headlands forming the backdrop for the characters' journeys.
One of Aidan Turner's favourite Poldark locations is Porthgwarra Cove. Located near Lands' End, it's a tiny beach with rugged cliffs that overlook crystal-clear water.
This secluded spot was used in one of the most famous scenes in Poldark - Ross going for an early morning swim from the clifftops. Demelza watched him from above as he stripped off to go for a dip, and it's been regarded as Poldark's steamiest moment ever.
Other beaches featured in the show include Holywell Bay, used for encounters with Ross and enemy George Warleggan. The rocky headlands of Gwennap Head were also used in Series 2.
Bodmin Moor is a wild and rugged landscape filled with dramatic granite tors. The moor is also known for its prehistoric history and is home to many ancient stone monuments.
This area is also associated with the Legends of King Arthur. It is said that near the panoramic Colliford Lake at Dozmary Pool, the Lady of the Lake gave Merlin Excalibur to gift to Prince Arthur Pendragon.
The area is also thought to be haunted by a black panther-like big cat, and has been referred to as ‘The Beast of Bodmin Moor’ due to numerous reports of livestock being savaged at night.

One of the most natural locations for Poldark is St Agnes Head where iconic engine houses perch serenely on the cliff-tops giving a silent reminder of Cornwall’s mining heyday. It also doubled as Nampara Valley and featured in numerous horse-riding scenes.
Another secluded beach that played a part in the filming of Poldark is Church Cove at Gunwalloe on the Lizard Peninsula. It was used for the dramatic night time shipwreck scene.
While Cornwall is often a picture book of pretty fishing villages and ice creams, it is also a landscape deeply shaped by mining heritage. Here, tin and copper were the main industries and cliffs were the site of many working mines.
As such, Levant Mine, which fans of Poldark will recognise as Tressiders Rolling Mill in recent filming, is a dramatic landmark and part of Cornwall and West Devon's Mining World Heritage site. It is a must see for anyone wanting to learn more about Cornish mining history.

Located on the west side of the Lizard peninsula, Kynance Cove is enclosed by a series of small tidal islands and steep rocky sea stacks. Its most prominent features are Asparagus Island, Gull Rock, The Bishop and Steeple Rock which frame the western shore.
The National Trust runs a car park and cafe at the head of the cove as well as a smattering of historic buildings and clifftop walks that can take you to other parts of the coast. It’s a great place to explore for a day or longer, as long as you plan your trip well!
