Croatia - Where is Succession Filmed?

where is succession filmed

The award-winning satire Succession is one of the most talked about shows on TV right now. It follows the dysfunctional Roy family, who own and run media conglomerate Waystar Royco.

The series has garnered widespread critical acclaim for its writing, acting, musical score and production values. It's also won two Golden Globes and three Primetime Emmy Awards.

New York City

HBO's satirical drama, Succession, is a high-end show that sweeps viewers away with its lavish production design. It centers around the Roy family, who own a media and entertainment empire called Waystar Royco.

The main filming locations of Succession are in New York City, where the Roy family and their Waystar Royco media empire are based. They've shot in the Financial District and the Hamptons, as well as Washington D.C.

Throughout the show, the Roy family's opulent world is portrayed with luxury hotels and sprawling estates in New York and across the globe. The Roys have stayed at renowned Manhattan locations like the Plaza Hotel, which was used for interior shots including the Palm Court, Terrace Room and Grand Ballroom.

The series also filmed in Tuscany, Italy, where Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgard) lives in an impressive Italian villa. The villa is located on Lake Como, and is just 33 miles from George Clooney's infamous Italian estate.

When the Roy family go on holiday in Season two of Succession, they take advantage of all Croatia has to offer. A super-expensive German-built yacht 'Solandge' was used to film the family's luxury vacation in the waters around Cavtat, on the Dubrovnik Riviera and on the islands of Korcula, Mljet and Sipan.

With stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites and more than 1,000 islands spread across the Adriatic Sea, it's no surprise that many international productions are taking advantage of Croatia's amazing locations for their shoots. This has helped to boost Croatia’s tourism profile and attract big budget TV productions.

Light Film International is a local outfit which provides all aspects of filming in Croatia, from casting and location scouting to equipment rental and crew. They have facilitated major projects such as Tribes of Europa for Netflix and Riesending for Senator Films, among others.

Despite being based in New York, the show hops around the world for scenes. This year, it made the move to Norway, as well as filmed scenes in Italy and Iceland.

In season three of Succession, the Roys head to Tuscany for Lady Caroline Collingwood’s (Dame Harriet Walter) wedding. Filmed in the region known as Chiantishire, the episode sees the Roys spend time in two private estates.

The first, Villa La Foce, is a stunning historic property in Val d’Orcia, a region that has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The estate is a popular destination for Italian and international weddings, parties and gatherings.

During the shoot, the crew also shot at Lake Como and Milan. We’ll also see Shiv and Tom touring the bathing pools of Bagno Vignoni and the view-tastic La Terrazza Del Chiostro restaurant in Pienza.

Succession isn't easy to watch, but there's something about this HBO series that softens the edge. The satirical drama is about a wealthy family trying to balance their personal lives with business interests.

The show's characters deal with a family legacy of debt, controversies, and more. But they also have to battle against their ruthless father's aloofness and lack of affection.

While the show is based in New York City, it's been filmed in other cities around the world too. One of the most memorable shoot locations was a wedding in England for Shiv and Tom's nuptials, which was actually shot at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire.

The castle is set on a 5000-acre estate with a lake, deer park and arboretum. It's just a short drive from the UK's capital.
