Whether you're looking for a place to retire, or simply want to live in a luxurious estate, there are many beautiful homes in Kansas. Stacker compiled a list of the most expensive houses in the state using data from Zillow and Matplotlib.
The newest inductee into this hall of fame is an 1871 fixer-upper in Kansas City, which just hit the market for $10 million. The house has no shortage of amenities, including a pool and home theater.
1. The Spirit of Avalon
A luxury house inspired by the legends of King Arthur, The Spirit of Avalon, sits on nearly 15 acres of land in Lake Quivira. The 17,755-square-foot mansion features seven bedrooms, several commercial-grade kitchens, libraries, conference rooms, a wine cellar and more.
It also has a waterfall, and a network of underground water-filled tunnels designed for scuba diving. This one-of-a-kind estate is located outside Kansas City, Kan., and is slated to sell for $11.8 million.
Listed by father-daughter team Gary Hosack and Katie Casey of Crown Realty, this property was designed by the home's owner, Lyn Shaw, with her late husband, Dennis Langley. A scuba diver and speechwriter for US Senator Joe Biden, Langley was a natural gas executive who died suddenly two years ago.
The one-of-a-kind estate is filled with quirky treasures, including a two-story library with ornate stained glass windows and a Spanish hutch from the 1490s. There's also a 35-foot waterfall, grottoes and pop-up holes.
2. Sauer Castle
If you drive up a winding road on a hill in Kansas City, you might turn and see what looks like a foreboding house out of a Gothic ghost story: a red-brick, three-story Victorian with a tower jutting skyward and a widow's walk on top. It's called Sauer Castle and it's a local and national landmark.
But it also is one of the most expensive houses in the state. It's owned by a New York City businessman who has made it his life's work to restore the home to its former glory.
And yet, the castle is slowly deteriorating. And so are the memories and rumors that have been circling this house since Anton Philip Sauer moved from Hessen, Germany, to Kansas City in 1868.
Carl Lopp, the great-great-grandson of Sauer, has a reputation for playing the property tax game- avoiding taxes for three years, then walking in days before the deadline and cutting a check. So when he put it up for sale on Zillow with a $10 million asking price, many local historians were surprised.
3. The Mansion at Middle Gap Road
The Mansion at Middle Gap Road is an unabashedly modern masterpiece with a price tag to match. The home was listed in the local press on May 3rd for a whopping $446 million, according to real estate company CB Richard Ellis. The palatial home boasts over 7,800 square feet of space on a little less than half an acre. The property also features a number of cool design and technological touches including an impressively designed pool, indoor and outdoor spas and a state-of-the-art audio system. The house also sports a surprisingly spacious master suite, with an eye-catching bathroom and shower.
The home also has the honour of being the most expensive house in Kansas, according to CB Richard Ellis. The mansion is located in the state's most exclusive and affluent neighborhood, aptly named The Peak. A bevy of high rollers including Alibaba CEO Jack Ma and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg call this enclave home.
4. The Estate at Hallbrook Farms
Hallbrook Farms is a premier luxury neighborhood located in Leawood, Kansas. It is home to an award-winning, private country club and has a rich heritage that dates back to 1927 when Joyce C. Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards, settled her family on this remote wooded expanse of land.
The estate for sale in Hallbrook Farms resides on a 1.7-acre property at the end of a cul-de-sac with panoramic views over the golf course. It offers a large entry, living and dining rooms, an open kitchen and main floor master and guest suites.
Aside from the gorgeous interiors and amenities of this house, it is a great example of why you should consider moving to Kansas. The Hallbrook Farms community is considered a “best choice” for executive lifestyles, according to NeighborhoodScout’s analysis.
The residents of this neighborhood are among the most educated in the country, with 77.3% of the adults having at least a bachelor’s degree, which is higher than the average neighborhood in America. The area also boasts some of the shortest commutes in the country.
