What it Takes to Become a Comedian

March 3, 2023

Do you enjoy making people laugh? Have people always said that you were born to be a comedian? Many years ago, if you said to people that you wanted to do stand-up comedy as a career, they would have laughed in your face. While it has always been a hard scene to get into, it is not more possible than ever to become a comedian as your job.

So, if you do want to make people laugh for a living, know that this is something you can do if you work hard. Let’s take a closer look at what it takes to become a comedian.

Time to Write Jokes and Stories

Most comedians do not go into a show unprepared. While they will not have a script they read from word for word, they are likely to have notes prepared and know what stories they are going to talk about with the crowd. Indeed, this can include some jokes they will want to pull out from their locker to make the audience laugh.

So, you are going to need the time to write jokes and stories. This type of brainstorming can take a while, as you want the content to be naturally amusing. You will need to consider situations in your life that might be funny, awkward or relatable in some way. Make sure you have the time to dedicate to this task.

The Ability to Observe

There is a lot you can learn from other comedians out there. Of course, you do not want to copy their style completely. But, you can observe and see the ways they entertain the audience and what people like. This can inspire you for your own comedy career.

In order to improve your own abilities, you will need to observe professionals in action. This means going to comedy clubs and enjoying stand-up comedy shows. For example, you can go to a Friday night comedy London show to see what keeps people amused and happy. You can create a formula and bring it back to the drawing table.

The Confidence to Practice

If you want to become a good comedian, you are going to have to do a lot of stand-up comedy shows to get noticed. Indeed, you have to gain a reputation and allow people to get to know you. This means you might have to get used to performing in front of small and intimate crowds in order to get to the big time. This can seem scary when you are a beginner. But, it is an important part of gaining experience.

Indeed, the more you practice, the more confidence you are going to gain. You have to be prepared to put yourself out there and see how far you can go. You can start by performing for people you know. Then, you can branch out to comedy clubs and other places to showcase your content.

Determination to Push Through Failures

Of course, you always want to be positive and believe you are the best comedian. But, you also have to face the reality that comedy is subjective. In other words, there are going to be some people that will not like your style or stories. We are not saying this to be harsh. It is the reality of being a comedian, and you have to learn to have a thick skin.

In particular, you need to have the determination to push through failures. Know that not every show is going to be successful. Some people will not laugh. This cannot stop you from doing what you love. Instead, you need to learn how to process and learn from those situations. Once you are able to do this, these experiences will not hold you back. Some people will love you and find your stories hilarious. This is what you have to focus and zone in on.

The Ambition to Success

You probably already know that it is difficult to become a comedy and make it a full-time career. Only the best are going to make it. Indeed, if you want to be one of those people, you need to have the ambition to succeed. You will have to ensure that you keep working hard all the time, trying to make progress.

Therefore, make sure you are ambitious and hungry from the beginning. This is going to keep pushing you even on the most difficult days. You will have setbacks and failures. But, if you are ambitious, you are going to keep on pushing the boundaries to make your dreams come true.
