where is 1883 being filmed

With the land acting as a main character, 1883’s filming locations follow the Dutton family’s journey from Texas to Montana.

The prequel series is a 'wagons west' story that follows the Dutton family's creation of the largest private ranch in the United States.

The show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, is coming back to Fort Worth this fall to film his latest spinoff, 1883: Bass Reeves. The six-part series will revolve around the titular frontier lawman, who was a former slave and became a U.S. deputy marshal in 1875, apprehending 3,000 criminals over a 32-year career.

Fort Worth Stockyards

The Fort Worth Stockyards is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas, full of rodeos, shops, restaurants, museums and saloons. It's also home to the world's only twice daily longhorn cattle drives.

With filming of the new Paramount+ series 1883 underway, there's no better time to visit this historical city. You might even see local stars like Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill or Isabel May in the series.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned local, the Stockyards is a great place to explore. Here, you can eat in an old-school Tex-Mex restaurant, drink margaritas, shop for Western wear, see a cowboy roping competition or two-step at Billy Bob's Texas - the largest honky tonk in the country.

In addition to the historic buildings and restaurants, the Stockyards also hosts a number of events including bull riding, rodeos, calf fries and the White Elephant Saloon. These attractions keep the spirit of the American West alive and make a fun complement to your big-city tour of Dallas.

Bosque Ranch

1883, the prequel series to Yellowstone created by Taylor Sheridan, was mainly shot in Texas and Montana. Filming was primarily based out of Weatherford, where Sheridan lives and which is home to Bosque Ranch Headquarters, which acts as the show's on-set filming location.

The film was also filmed across Texas, including Fort Worth's Stockyards district and the towns of Granbury, Amarillo, and Guthrie. They also filmed at Farina's Winery & Cafe in Granbury (which stood in for an old-fashioned salon), and at the famed 6666 Ranch in Amarillo.

In addition to being a tourist destination, the Fort Worth Stockyards was used as a filming location in 1883, and the filming team transformed the area in order to recreate a true-to-life Old West environment. The Stockyards boasts Old West gunfight reenactments during weekends and daily cattle drives, so be sure to check it out if you're in the area!

Texas State Railroad

The Texas State Railroad is a historical line between Palestine and Rusk, Texas. Established in 1881, the railroad runs through East Texas' scenic piney woods and hardwood creek bottoms.

The railroad has been featured in over 30 big-screen movies, television series and special productions as well as documentaries and commercials. It is a must-visit for tourists and steam enthusiasts.

Located at the end of the railroad is a water tower, lake and comfortable waiting room / museum where visitors can enjoy a meal or beverage while soaking up the beauty of East Texas. The station also has vintage cars that you can ride in for a scenic tour.

This is a great place to stop and take photos while enjoying a picnic lunch or snack. There is also a small gift shop and gift wrap area for souvenirs.

Yellowstone Film Ranch

The Dutton family's Montana ranch is the setting for a series of incredibly popular Neo-Western dramas. Fans have taken to the series' intense family drama, political intrigue and more knock-down drag-out fights per episode than you can shake a branding iron at.

The show's creator Taylor Sheridan, however, has switched things up for season 4 of 1883. Sheridan moved the production to Montana to create a larger fictional world for the show.

Located in Livingston, Montana, Yellowstone Film Ranch is a one-stop shop for filming in the state. It offers industry-leading tax credit services, an operational western town backlot, vast prairie and forested land, medieval sets, and a spacious production office.

The Western Backlot is styled after a late 1800s gold rush town uniquely located in the pristine Paradise Valley of Montana. It's surrounded by vast sagebrush and forested serenity with 360-degree views of glacier mountain peaks, rolling hills and Emigrant Peak. The filming location also has a studio space featuring cabin interiors, a costume & prop house and a large production office in downtown Livingston.
