where is american rust filmed

Based on the novel by Philipp Meyer, American Rust is a Showtime series that explores the tattered American dream through the eyes of a complicated and compromised police chief. Jeff Daniels stars as Del Harris in this compelling family drama that takes place in a Rust Belt town in Pennsylvania.

Pittsburgh

The Showtime series American Rust is based on the novel of the same name by Philipp Meyer, published in 2009. It depicts life in Pennsylvania during what is known as the Great Recession.

The story focuses on the town of Buell in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and how people are trying to make ends meet. The town was once a prosperous steel manufacturing center, but the industry has lost its appeal and now the residents are struggling.

In order to create a true portrayal of the region, the show filming crew used a number of locations throughout Pennsylvania for shooting scenes. These include Carrie Blast Furnaces in Swissvale, the State Correctional Institution - Pittsburgh, and Pitcairn Road.

The show also uses 31st Street Studios, which is located in Pittsburgh. This studio is the base of the production and features multiple soundstages for filming.

New Castle

The rustbelt region of Pennsylvania is used as the backdrop for Showtime’s American Rust, which is based on Philipp Meyer’s novel. It stars two-time Emmy winner Jeff Daniels, Maura Tierney and Alex Neustaedter.

The show follows the plight of Buell, PA police chief Del Harris (Daniels), who’s a good guy, trying to do the right thing. But he can’t help feeling conflicted about a crime he believes his girlfriend’s son is involved in.

While most of the production takes place in Pittsburgh, filming also took place in New Castle and Monroeville. In Monroeville, many streets were closed off to the public for the duration of the shoot.

In New Castle, the Lawrence Courthouse and Shenango China plant, which operated from 1901 to 1991, were both used as a backdrop for the show. The Shenango China plant is now an antiques museum, and the Courthouse is a beautiful building that sits on a hill just southeast of downtown.

Lawrence County

Lawrence County is a place with a lot to offer for a show like American Rust. It's home to New Castle and McConnells Mill State Park, and it has a number of recognizable locations.

Lawrence County also boasts several industrial parks. The area is known for its iron and steel industries, and these businesses provide jobs to people in Lawrence County.

Many of these companies have their own recycling programs, which are easy for residents to use. Paper, cardboard, hardback books, and plastics can be dropped off at these collection sites.

The solid waste department operates a cardboard pickup service that picks up waste cardboard from 120+ local businesses and industries. The pickup service is run full-time and is available five days a week.

Filming for American Rust took place in Pittsburgh and Lawrence County, where a variety of locations were used to create the fictional town of Buell. In addition, several scenes were filmed in Allegheny County, including scenes at the State Correctional Facility in Westmoreland County.

Fayette County

The first season of the Showtime series American Rust was filmed in Pittsburgh and multiple locations throughout western Pennsylvania. The show is set in the fictional town of Buell, in Fayette County, which has a history of being home to steel production and industrial jobs.

To depict the region authentically, the filming crew shoots sequences in various towns and neighborhoods, including Ambridge, a borough in Beaver County; Portersville and Harmony in Butler County; Donora, a borough in Washington County; Apollo, a borough in Armstrong County; and Perryopolis and Belle Vernon in Fayette County.

One episode of the show was filmed at Carrie Blast Furnaces, a National Landmark that has largely fallen into disrepair. The episode also features scenes shot around the city of New Castle and the McConnells Mill State Park in Lawrence County.
