Chesapeake Shores is one of the most popular family dramas on The Hallmark Channel. It mixes romance, family drama, and quaint, beautiful locations that keep fans returning for more.
Adapted from Sherryl Woods' series of novels, the show is set in Maryland, not far from Baltimore. Despite being set in Maryland, Chesapeake Shores is actually filmed on Vancouver Island.
Qualicum Beach
Known for its independent shops and restaurants, Qualicum Beach sits on a hillside overlooking the ocean with pretty streets lined with hanging baskets and offers hours of opportunities to shop, dine or just linger. It’s a busy summer destination as visitors come to rent cottages to experience the extraordinary summers Vancouver Island is known for.
Steeped in quaint British heritage, famous for local arts, crafts and beautiful English gardens, modern day Qualicum Beach is a dazzling seaside playground. Located just thirty minutes drive from six provincial parks, the town will capture your heart and your imagination as you enjoy the gentle countryside and seemingly endless sandy beaches of central Vancouver Island.
The enchanting seaside village of Qualicum Beach, like its close neighbour Parksville, is the perfect getaway for exploring all the pleasurable vacation activities Vancouver Island has to offer. With its central location, the town is accessible by road, rail and air making it a convenient base from which to enjoy your Vancouver Island adventure.
Parksville
Chesapeake Shores is one of the most popular Hallmark shows and is a favourite among fans of all ages. The series follows Abby O’Brien (Meghan Ory) and her family, including her twin daughters Bree and Jess.
Abby aims to re-open the O’Brien Inn, which she had run with her mother, and renovate it as a vacation rental, allowing her to have a calmer life away from her hectic New York City life. But when her sister Jess (Laci J. Mailey) comes to town, her plans for the inn take a turn and she’s forced to face her past in a whole new way.
As the show is set in Chesapeake Shores, Maryland, fans are naturally wondering where the show is filmed. Unfortunately, Chesapeake Shores is not actually located in Maryland and it is primarily filmed in Canada.
Nanoose Bay
Chesapeake Shores is the Hallmark Channel's most-watched family drama. Fans love watching the O'Brien family navigate romance, drama and beautiful scenery.
The show was renewed for a fifth season, which will air this summer. While the show is set in Maryland, the production actually filmed the majority of the action on Vancouver Island.
Parksville and Qualicum Beach are the main filming locations for the series. But they also filmed in Nanoose Bay, a small seaside community located between Nanaimo and Parksville on Vancouver Island's east coast.
Nanaimo
The book-turned-TV drama Chesapeake Shores is based on a series of novels by Sherryl Woods. However, unlike many Hallmark Channel shows and films, this one isn't shot in Chesapeake Shores, Maryland, but rather on Vancouver Island's West Coast.
According to the Vancouver Island Free Daily, the small towns of Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Nanaimo stand in for various American locales on this Canadian TV series. Filming took place last year and this summer, the producers returned to capture even more stunning scenery.
The town square cafe scenes from the show are filmed at Bailey's In the Village Café in Qualicum Beach. The cafe exteriors, however, are filmed at Gabriel's Café in Nanaimo, located on Commercial Street. Some of the sailing scenes are filmed at Fairwinds Marina at Schooner Cove in Nanoose Bay, between Lantzville and Parksville north of Nanaimo.
