A lot of TV shows are filmed in front of a green screen, so viewers never really see the actual location. But there are some that are filmed on location.
Dick Wolf’s #OneChicago triumvirate of Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med regularly film in the city. Here’s where you can find them.
Cinespace Chicago Film Studios
Cinespace Chicago Film Studios is a production facility and support service provider for the film, television and digital media industry. It is located on the west side of Chicago and is 1.45 million square feet in size.
It is owned and operated by Cinespace Studios Inc., a family-owned company. This studio specializes in the development, management and operation of studio facilities for film, television and digital media production.
In recent months, the facility has added Starz’s Power Book IV: Force and Amazon Prime’s Paper Girls. It also has AMC’s 61st Street, a drama about a young black high school athlete who gets caught up in the criminal justice system.
The North Lawndale-based facility is the latest in a race to secure soundstages for Hollywood streaming giants. TPG Real Estate Partners has acquired the Toronto and Chicago campuses of Cinespace Studios, home to productions like Dick Wolf’s “Chicago Fire,” Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy” and MGM’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Chicago Fire Department Engine 18
The Chicago Fire Department (CFD) is one of the largest municipal fire departments in the United States. The CFD provides fire suppression, rescue services and emergency medical response to the city of Chicago and its surrounding areas.
The Chicago fire department protects over 2.7 million people in and around the city of Chicago. It is also one of the oldest major organized fire departments in the nation.
While the show can be filmed almost anywhere, many of the exterior shots are shot at an actual fire station. NBC’s Chicago Fire Station 51, Engine 18 is a historic firehouse located on the West Side of Chicago.
While filming is allowed in the building, fans are not permitted to enter the station during production. This is due to a sliding pole that is incorporated into the station’s design, which is not a part of the building in reality.
Lottie’s Pub
Chicago has been a hotbed for television and movie filming in recent years. Last year, 13 shows were actively filming in the city.
Among the numerous shows filmed in Chicago is Love Is Blind, which takes place in the thriving South Side neighborhood of Englewood. It is the story of two young friends, Simon and Kareem, who are struggling to figure out their future after community college.
The show is set in a variety of different locations, but the majority of it is filmed at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios. The studio is sprawled across 1.45 million square feet and is home to 32 soundproof stages.
Another Chicago-based series that is filmed in and around the city is Chicago Fire. NBC’s firefighter drama is often filmed in Bucktown and Logan Square.
Damen Silos
The city of Chicago is a prime location for many TV shows. For example, the series Chicago P.D is filmed in the titular city as well as sister shows Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.
The show is based out of Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, which has 32 soundproof stages and elaborate facilities for set development, production offices and parking. The studios are located at 2621 West 15th Place, and are sprawled across 1.45 million square feet of space.
There are several exterior shots filmed in the city and around the area of the Canalport Riverwalk. The Pedway system, which connects the Central Business District to the city’s downtown neighborhoods, is also a popular spot for filming.
The Damen Silos, formerly the tallest structures in the city, are currently an abandoned building, but still stand on a strip of land near the south branch of the Chicago River. These old grain elevators are a draw for urban explorers and graffiti artists, who paint over their rusting walls.
