The spinoff of the cult film The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai is currently streaming on Netflix. It’s got everything you could possibly want in a martial arts show – nostalgia, action, drama, and comedy.
While the series is set in Los Angeles, a lot of scenes weren’t actually filmed there. Some of them are in Georgia, while others are in Okinawa.
Locations
If you're a fan of the Karate Kid franchise, you're probably familiar with Daniel LaRusso's (Ralph Macchio) luxurious, Spanish-style villa. Carefully selected to reflect Daniel San's new status in the world, the home is said to be situated in Encino -- a quiet, affluent neighborhood of Los Angeles.
However, it turns out that Cobra Kai was actually filmed in Marietta, Georgia at 130 Woodlawn Drive NE, about 20 miles north of Atlanta. All of the exterior scenes at LaRusso Auto Group, as well as all of Daniel's family's interiors and exterior shots, were filmed there too.
Other key locations filmed in Atlanta include Kenny's Alley, Tomi Village Green, Obstaculos Lake, and the Fernbank Science Center. Season three also sees Daniel travel to Japan to visit Tomi Village, a village in Okinawa, Mr. Miyagi's hometown. The two skyscraper views of the Doyona International headquarters are filmed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. And the entrance hall is filmed at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.
Official Merchandise
Fans of the series can show their fandom with a variety of Cobra Kai merchandise. Whether you’re looking for a hoodie, tee, or trucker cap, Hot Topic has an official Cobra Kai merch collection perfect for fans of all ages.
The original Cobra Kai was founded in the early 1980s by John Kreese, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and champion martial artist. Kreese aimed to teach his students the art of self-defense through a combination of aggressive methods and a balanced philosophy.
However, Kreese’s methods came under fire in 1984 when his top student, Johnny Lawrence, was defeated by Daniel Larusso in the All Valley Karate Tournament. This incident led to the disbandment of Cobra Kai, and for many years, Kreese was a recluse.
Thirty years later, a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai dojo, reigniting his old rivalry with a now successful Daniel Larusso. It’s a classic Karate Kid storyline, but what makes Cobra Kai stand out is that it takes the old formula and throws in fresh new elements.
Characters
Cobra Kai features a cast of larger-than-life characters. From the LaRussos to Daniel and Johnny, the show has a diverse range of personalities that fans will love exploring.
Aisha is one of the most exciting and compelling characters on the show. She was a shy, timid child when she first started training with the dojo, but now she's a fierce fighter who can take on anyone in her path.
While she doesn't have the best storylines, Aisha is an incredibly strong character who has grown tremendously throughout her time on Cobra Kai. She also has a strong sense of loyalty towards her fellow students, and she has a hard time giving up her training when she's not feeling like it's working out for her.
Demetri is another Cobra Kai student who has shown some impressive growth over the course of the series. He's a fan-favorite and a character who can always be counted on for comic relief and well-timed pop culture references.
Episodes
If you’ve seen Cobra Kai, you probably know that Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) live in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. But while the show’s characters spend most of their time there, it seems that not all of the action is filmed in California.
According to Reel, a website that tracks production for television shows, the majority of scenes in Cobra Kai are actually filmed in Georgia, despite the fact that California is used as the main fictional location. Many of the exterior shots of Johnny and Miguel’s Cobra Kai dojo were filmed at Crossroads Shopping Center in Atlanta, but the interior is largely shot in Georgia as well.
Another location used in the show is Daniel’s old South Seas apartment complex that was seen extensively in The Karate Kid Parts I and III. The outside of this apartment complex was filmed in San Fernando Valley, while the interior was filmed at 18555 Burbank Boulevard, Tarzana, CA.
