After faking his own death and assuming an assumed name, Dexter Morgan is living in a small town in upstate New York. This is a stark contrast to his home in Miami, but it also raises the stakes for the series' infamous blood-spatter expert.
He works at a local outdoor and gun shop, Fred's Fish & Game. He's dating police chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) and is keeping his homicidal urges under control with a rigorous workout routine. But when he meets a brash local named Matt Caldwell, he begins to wonder if his Dark Passenger is still alive.
Shelburne Falls
The town of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts is the filming location for most of Dexter: New Blood. The small village is located in Franklin County, about 120 miles northwest of Boston and 85 miles north of Worcester.
The area straddles the Deerfield River and Massaemett Mountain rises east of the town. Shelburne Falls has a picturesque downtown that features a wide range of shops, restaurants, and services.
It is a historic town that was once a thriving fishing spot for Native Americans. It has a rich history and was a significant economic hub for the region during the Victorian era.
The village has several popular attractions including the Bridge of Flowers, a former trolley bridge that was repurposed as a civic garden. It also has the Glacial Potholes, ancient natural sculptures carved into the rocky riverbed below the waterfall. Shelburne Falls is a charming and welcoming place to visit with plenty of shops, restaurants, and art galleries.
Iron Lake
The first season of Showtime's Dexter New Blood has been a big hit with fans of the original series. The sequel reintroduces Michael C. Hall as serial killer Dexter Morgan, who has faked his death and escaped to an isolated New York town to live under the name Jim Lindsay.
The new season focuses on Dexter’s reluctance to kill in Iron Lake, New York. It’s a cold, isolated, wintry town that’s home to fewer than 3,000 people.
It’s also a place where the crime rate is almost nonexistent. The chilly climate, claustrophobic feel and 'everyone knows everyone' vibes of the small town make for a much different backdrop than the steamy tropics of Miami.
Filming for the show took place in various cities across Central and Western Massachusetts. In particular, Franklin County, Shelburne Falls and Whately were used to create the backdrop for Iron Lake.
Camp Collier
If you watch Dexter: New Blood, you may notice that they filmed the show's Iron Lake scenes at Camp Collier, located in Gardner, Massachusetts. This place is a recreation ground with several log cabins that are actually part of a former Boy Scouts camp.
It's an interesting place to explore, as it's a quaint wooded natural area with bluish green log cabins. It's owned by a scouting trust and is open to the public.
The site has been preserved, and the museum is displaying a collection of photographs and antique Scout uniforms. It also has an exhibit about the early days of scouting in Florida, with some items on loan from local scout memorabilia collectors.
While scouting in the United States is now a big business, it was not always so. Back in the 19th century, wealthy advertising magnates like Barron Gift Collier promoted scouting by giving free admission to Luna Park at Coney Island and encouraging thousands of boys to attend special Scout camps.
New England Studios
Filming for Dexter new blood took place at New England Studios located in Devens, Massachusetts. The studio is a state-of-the-art film and television complex that opened in 2014.
A major unmet need for the local film industry, New England Studios has four sound stages that can be used for a variety of films and shows. Its infrastructure is built on a 75 mile fiber optic network that connects all of the studios, offices and support buildings.
The show also filmed scenes in Franklin County, including Lake Town in Shelburne Falls, and at Odd Fellows Hall. Other locations filmed within the county include Iron Bridge, and the Shelburne Falls police station.
Middlesex County is also home to a number of locations that were filmed for the show. Some of these places included Nagog Hill Road in Littleton Town, Boxborough, and Westford.
