SINCE 2004, hit show Doc Martin has let viewers enjoy the beautiful views of Cornwall's coastline. Fans often wonder where the show is filmed, and where they can visit these filming locations themselves.
Port Isaac is a picturesque Cornish fishing village where most exterior shots of Doc Martin take place. It is also where most of the interior scenes in the show are filmed.
Port Gaverne
Doc Martin is a Uk tv comedy crisis about a doctor who’s a truculent and tactless manner causes mayhem in a small Cornish community. It’s filmed on location inside Port Isaac, Cornwall and most of the interior filming is done in a barn nearby.
It’s a great show to watch if you like your humour slow and subtle. It features a quirky cast, including a bird-brained receptionist, a bumbling police chief and a nutty pharmacist.
Despite being a quaint fishing village, Port Isaac has grown a lot since the Doc Martin series aired in 2004 and now attracts tourists in droves. The village is a picturesque jumble of tiny cobbled streets and has some of the most beautiful scenery in North Cornwall.
The village is home to several locations in the show, including the quaint old stone cottage where Doc Martin runs his surgery and Fern Cottage. Both are located on Roscarrock Hill, overlooking the pretty harbour of Port Isaac.
St Nonna’s Church
The ITV drama Doc Martin has captivated viewers over the past 18 years, with Martin Clunes’ bad-tempered village doctor with a fear of blood battling to improve the health of his fictional seaside community. Fans have flocked to Port Isaac, a real-life fishing village in North Cornwall, as many of the filming locations are found here.
Known as the Cathedral of the Moor, St Nonna’s Church is a beautiful Norman church situated on Bodmin Moor. It’s famed for its striking font, which contains a collection of 79 bench ends carved between 1510 and 1530.
Inside the church you can see the imposing timber screen and altar rail which stretch the full width of the church. It’s a beautiful sight and the church is well worth visiting in person for a quiet moment to sit, meditate or simply take in the architecture.
It’s also worth a visit for the beautiful St Nonna’s Holy Well, named after the sixth century Celtic Christian missionary who was the mother of St. David, who also had a well in Altarnun, where she founded a prayer community.
The Old School Hotel
When it comes to filming locations in Port Isaac, there’s no shortage of choices. From the dramatic coastline to the beautiful village centre, it’s no wonder this picturesque town has made its name as a filming location for ITV drama Doc Martin.
The Old School Hotel is one of the most famous Doc Martin filming locations and has appeared twice in the series. Firstly, it was where the doctor was first jilted at the altar by Louisa in season three and later he tied the knot with her.
The Old School Hotel is surrounded by the stunning Cornish coastline, making it a favourite among walkers, swimmers and surfers. It’s also within easy reach of the South West Coast Path.
Fern Cottage
The series has a lot of sets around Port Isaac, but one place that is well worth visiting is Fern Cottage. Not only is it the location of Doc Martin’s surgery, but it’s also a gorgeously positioned property which offers incredible views over the historic harbour of Port Isaac.
The ground floor is home to a modern galley kitchen, a separate dining room with flag stone flooring and a wood burner set within a stone fireplace, and a sitting room which offers superb harbour and sea views. The first floor boasts two double bedrooms with wonderful harbour and sea views and fitted wardrobes, a large modern bathroom.
Fern Cottage is a fantastic place to stay if you’re looking for the perfect Cornish hideaway. It offers the right amount of privacy for ultimate relaxation but it’s still perfectly positioned between Thornbury and Meaford when you want to shop, stroll or grab an ice cream.
