The Mamma Mia movies were filmed on the Greek islands of Skopelos and Skiathos. The Pelion peninsula on the mainland was also used for filming purposes.
One of the most famous Mamma Mia filming locations on Skopelos is a tiny whitewashed chapel that's perched on a clifftop in northern Skopelos. This was where Sophie and Sky's wedding scene was filmed.
Skopelos
Skopelos, also known as "The Green Island" and the "Blue-Green" island, is one of the last unspoiled Greek islands that has managed to escape the tourist hordes. While its neighbours in the Sporades have been overwhelmed with visitors, Skopelos has not yet succumbed to the same over-tourism as some of the other more popular holiday destinations in Greece.
There are several Mamma Mia filming locations on Skopelos, including the beach of Glysteri, on the east coast of the island. This sheltered beach is well organized, with a busy beach cafe and sunbeds to rent. It's popular with locals too and can get a bit crowded in high season, but it's worth visiting for its gorgeous setting.
The iconic Agios Ioannis Kastri church on the north-east coast of Skopelos was used for Sophie's wedding scene. The small chapel sits atop a steep cliff and was one of the most recognizable Mamma Mia filming locations.
Damouchari
The musical rom-com is known for its fun plot twist and fantastic ABBA songs. But it also features some stunning locations and sunny backdrops.
The film was shot in Skopelos, Skiathos and Damouchari on the Pelion Peninsula of Greece. This region is one of the most beautiful with fascinating scenery.
A romantic village that blends the mountain and sea, it was chosen by the movie production for a series of scenes where Donna meets Rosie and Tanya. It was also where the climax of the Dancing Queen song was filmed.
It is a quiet and peaceful settlement in the Mouresi area of eastern Pelion in mainland Greece, a place that receives little tourism.
The jetty that you can see in the movie was built especially for the scene but it was eventually removed to preserve the scenic beauty of the place. The beach itself is a lovely blue-green gem with white pebbles that are perfect for a swim.
Skiathos
The main location for Mamma Mia in Greece was the island of Skopelos but there were also scenes filmed on the quaint Pelion village of Damouchari, and Skiathos.
Located in the Northern Sporades, the island of Skiathos is known for its lively reputation and has an international airport. Despite its popularity, it can still be quite quiet at other times of the year and you can enjoy an idyllic beach break here even without resorting to the tourist traps.
The island has a wide range of accommodation available from small and affordable hotels, to self-catering villas. The town itself is a bustling hub with a huge selection of restaurants and bars.
Kastani Beach
Kastani Beach was a favorite spot for the film's producers to shoot the jukebox musical Mamma Mia. It's one of the island's most famous beaches with beautiful crystal clear waters and it's also surrounded by pine-covered cliffs.
The main scene in the movie is set here, where Sophie (Lily James) and Sky (Shane MacGowan) sing their song, "Lay All Your Love on Me" while lounging on the beach. The scene where Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters) jump off the pier at Damouchari was filmed here, as well as the wedding scenes.
The jetty and beach bar that feature in the movie are no longer there but the beach is still a popular choice for sunbathing, swimming, or relaxing. It's easy to access by car and is often crowded by Mamma Mia fans and island coach tours.
