Netflix's OBX is set on barrier islands off North Carolina. However, the show's producers decided to film in South Carolina after North Carolina's bathroom bill forced them to move their locations due to inclusivity concerns.
The series is mainly set on Kildare Island, which is actually a fictional town mixed with the names of two actual Outer Banks towns (Dare County and Kill Devil Hills). Many of the series' scenes are filmed around Charleston, South Carolina.
Kildare
OBX is filmed mainly in the fictional Outer Banks of North Carolina. However, the show also explores other locations, including the Bahamas in season 2 and Barbados in season 3.
Kildare Island is a mash-up of Dare County and Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina, which are both real towns. It's split into two territories: Figure Eight, a rich side that is home to the Kooks, and The Cut, which is the natural habitat of the Pogues.
When filming began, series creators Jonas Pate and Josh Pate wanted the OBX location to be "perfected," pulling their favorite elements from around the state's coast into one place. They were able to do this by moving the production to Charleston and surrounding area, which became the main town of Kildare, with an affluent and less-affluent section of the town to mirror the characters.
Several scenes for Kildare Harbor were filmed in Shem Creek, Mount Pleasant, which is a local favorite for boating and waterside dining. Various scenes for Heyward's Seafood, owned by Pope's dad, and The Wreck restaurant were filmed here as well.
Shem Creek
The series filmed around Charleston, but the majority of the show's boating scenes were filmed on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. This waterside enclave is popular with locals and visitors alike for its scenic views, quaint marina and plenty of sun-soaked fun.
One of the more notable locations is a small stretch of Pitt Street in Mount Pleasant's Old Village District. A few of the show's more memorable scenes were filmed here, including the Kildare County Sheriff's Station and the fake Sandy Point Surf Shop.
The real star of the show is Geechie Seafood, a seafood shack that sits right on Shem Creek. This slick spot is the place to go for the most impressive array of fish, shrimp and other Lowcountry delicacies. It's also a perfect place to catch the best sunset in town by the water or on a kayak. It may not have the same cachet as the fabled Outer Banks, but it's still worth a visit.
Lowndes Grove
If you’re a fan of the Netflix show OBX, then you’ve probably already guessed that it’s filmed in our beloved Low Country. That’s right, it’s filmed right here in Charleston, and it’s no coincidence that a lot of the scenes take place around Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant.
It’s also worth noting that the show’s producers Jonas and Josh Pate grew up in North Carolina, so some of the locations may have been taken from their own experience.
Another popular OBX location is the Tanneyhill plantation, which is actually a real estate in Charleston and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1786. In fact, it’s often used as a wedding and event venue.
The beautiful property sits on 14 acres along the Ashley River, and is located in the peaceful Wagener Terrace neighborhood in downtown Charleston. It’s also just a short walk from Hampton Park and The Citadel, which are both popular areas to explore.
Charleston
Netflix's Outer Banks is a modern-day treasure hunt that takes place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, which is made up of several islands off of the coast. The show was created by Jonas Pate, who grew up in North Carolina and was originally planning to film it in Wilmington.
However, due to inclusivity concerns, Netflix chose to shoot the show in Charleston, South Carolina instead. In addition to the OBX, series makers used locations all over Charleston for various scenes.
One of the most popular spots filmed for Outer Banks is Washington Square Park, where John B and Sarah Cameron strolled on their trip to UNC Chapel Hill in season 1. The park is located right in the heart of downtown Charleston's historic district, with gorgeous azaleas and Spanish moss.
Another OBX location is the Shem Creek marsh, where the Pogues and Kooks take their boats out for some fun. This area is also the setting for the Midsummers soiree, a lavish event held by Kildare's upper class Kooks.
