Our Kind of People is set on the historic town of Oak Bluffs in Martha’s Vineyard. It follows single mom Angela Vaughn (Yaya DaCosta), who moves to the island to open her own natural haircare business.
But she’s quickly learning that being part of the social elite in this summer resort community isn’t easy. And she also finds out some dark secrets about her mother’s past.
Brooklyn Arts Center
The Brooklyn Arts Center is a stunning and spectacular multi-use event venue complex in historic downtown Wilmington, NC. It hosts fabulous fundraisers, art shows, upscale vintage flea markets and other community events.
The complex includes an iconic cathedral with 50-foot ceilings, original brick and plaster walls, stained glass windows, and LED-lit drapes that can accommodate up to 250 seated guests for a banquet. It also features a private garden and bridal suite that can function as a dressing room for couples.
The building is a landmark that has been a center for spiritual and cultural activities in the neighborhood since it was constructed at the corner of Campbell and North Fourth streets in 1888. It was renovated in 2011 to become a performing arts and wedding venue.
Landfall
Set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the governor of Puerto Rico in 2019, Landfall offers a prismatic portrait of collective trauma and resistance. Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life, the film examines a two-fold crisis: Maria's hurricane winds and waters; a 72-billion-dollar debt crisis that crippled the island well before Maria hit.
Featuring intimate encounters with Puerto Ricans, the film explores a question of contemporary global relevance: when the world falls apart, who do we become? A co-production of POV and ITVS, Landfall is the debut feature documentary by award-winning Puerto Rican filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo.
Wellesley Place
Wellesley Place is a residential neighborhood that is situated within walking distance to Central Street Wellesley, Linden Square and Home Town Center. It is also a short drive to the Natick Mall.
Residents of Wellesley Place are surrounded by local businesses, including a variety of restaurants and retail stores. Several parks are close by as well.
Station No. 2
This 100+ year old fire station on the corner of 5th and Castle is one of Wilmington’s more recognizable landmarks. The venue boasts a few perks, including the largest fountain display in town (and you have to go up the stairs to get there). This is a fine place to hold your wedding reception or other special event for that matter.
The station is also home to a short-term rental a la mode called the Historic Firehouse Suite. It is the only event space in Wilmington to offer such a thing. It has a plethora of amenities to keep you and your guests comfortable, including an outdoor garden courtyard with flagstone pavers, the largest aquarium in town and some seriously impressive art deco gizmos.
Cape Fear Country Club
A few of the scenes for FOX's new drama series "Our Kind of People" are filmed at Cape Fear Country Club. The show is based on Lawrence Otis Graham's 1999 nonfiction book, which follows the lives of six of the richest Black elite in America.
This 18-hole course is located at Cape Fear National in Brunswick Forest and is a great place for a round of golf. It's a Donald Ross design and is an excellent choice for regular rounds or a new destination for you and your friends when visiting Wilmington.
The course winds through heavily undulating land and features several bridges through wetlands, three waterfalls and beach bunkers that are all flanked by native Southeastern North Carolina grasses and wildflowers. It's a dramatic layout that will challenge even the most seasoned golfer.
Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall
Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall is a senior living / Continuing Care Retirement Community in the heart of Wilmington's desirable Autumn Hall neighborhood.
