The HBO series Raised by Wolves tells the story of two androids who are trying to raise human children on a planet called Kepler-22b. It is a sci-fi drama that is directed by many renowned directors.

Among them is Ridley Scott who is no stranger to high-concept science fiction like Blade Runner and Prometheus. He directed the first two episodes of this show and exec produced it.

Cape Town

One of the most popular filming locations for international production companies, Cape Town has become a desirable backdrop to many films and TV series. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere, natural beauty and liberal outlook have contributed to its reputation as an exciting and eventful city.

The main city is located on a peninsula topped by a mountain. A slow-moving cable car climbs to the top of Table Mountain, where there are sweeping views of the city and the harbor.

Moreover, Cape Town is home to the world-famous South African wine industry. The country’s first wine was bottled here, and a number of famous vineyards remain in the area, including Groot and Klein Constantia.

The Western Cape is a popular filming location for international productions, in part thanks to South Africa’s rebate scheme for foreign productions that film here. The region also features a number of development studios, such as Film Afrika, which provides youth employment and direct foreign investment to the local economy.

HBO Max’s show-stopping sci-fi series Raised by Wolves is one of the best TV shows on the network and has gained the attention of many viewers. Created by Aaron Guzikowski, it revolves around two androids - Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) - tasked with raising human children on a virgin planet after Earth has been destroyed in a religious war.

The second season of the series was shot entirely in South Africa, particularly in Cape Town and Helderberg. However, the filming areas were slightly unique in comparison to the first season, as it depicted an alternate part of the planet Kepler-22b.

While shooting the show, renowned director Ridley Scott was blown away by the spectacular mountainous backdrop of Stellenbosch and Lourensford wine estate in Somerset West. He said the quiver trees made South African landscapes feel different to foreign audiences, and they were also perfect for capturing the distinctive planet of Kepler-22b.

Cape Winelands

Four-time Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, The Martian, Prometheus and Gladiator) created another of his sci-fi worlds to the backdrop of magnificent South African locations. Magnificent vineyards like Stellenbosch and Lourensford Wine Estate outside Somerset West form the haunting backdrop of planet Kepler 22-b in HBO's show-stopping Raised by Wolves.

The region is best known for its world-class wines, but there are also many things to do in Cape Winelands. Nature lovers, hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, cultural boffs and culinary connoisseurs can all enjoy the area's diverse offerings.

Travellers can explore a range of wine farms, tasting rooms and cellar tours with a variety of local cuisine pairings to enhance their experiences. The area also boasts a variety of boutique hotels, guest houses and small villas to suit a wide range of budgets.

The biggest-budget sci-fi series ever filmed in South Africa, HBO's Raised by Wolves follows two androids tasked with raising human children on a virgin planet called Kepler 22b after Earth is destroyed due to religious rifts. Located north of Cape Town, the region is surrounded by both Indian and Atlantic oceans, making it a perfect backdrop for the isolated planet.

Stellenbosch, a beautiful town surrounded by wine farms and eye-catching mountains, played the role of the filming location for the series. Its tree-laden landscape gave the show's alien planet a distinct look and made it feel like an otherworldly place to watch.

The renowned director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, The Martian, Prometheus and Gladiator) was in town to shoot the first season of the show. And the stunning scenery was a big part of what drew him to the area.
