One of the most popular crime dramas on television, Shetland is based on Ann Cleeves novels and has won over many fans thanks to its gripping storyline and beautiful scenery.
The series stars Douglas Henshall as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez and is filmed mainly on the Shetland Islands and parts of Scotland.
Lerwick
Lerwick is a fascinating port town, where the North Sea meets the Atlantic. It’s Britain’s most northerly commercial harbour and its sheltered deep water makes it a centre for fishing and marine exploration.
It also hosts Shetland College, which is a constituent partner institution of the University of the Highlands & Islands. This college, which is based in Lerwick and has learning centres throughout Shetland, offers degree-level education.
Shetland College was founded by James Anderson, a British-born businessman who grew up in Lerwick. He made his fortunes overseas but never forgot about his island home.
Shetland College is located in the heart of the town and is one of the largest institutions on the Shetland Islands. Students can study a wide range of subjects, including National Certificate (HNC) qualifications and degrees.
Trondra
The island of Trondra, linked by a road bridge from the mainland, has been used several times for filming. It’s home to a beached wreck that we see in the opening trailers and, just over the bridge, a large wooden house with boat shed and pier.
It’s also home to Burland Croft, which was used as one of the central filming locations in series two. Today, it’s run by Mary and Tommy Isbister and is open to the public.
Shetland has a long history as a fishing and farming community, but its economy was transformed by North Sea oil in the 1970s. Now, thanks to oil money, tourism is strong, roads and other infrastructure are good and unemployment is low.
It’s no wonder that Shetland is becoming a popular destination for tourists around the world. It’s a fantastic destination to visit, with some incredible filming locations. So, whether you’re a Shetland fan or not, get out there and explore the islands that inspired the crime drama.
Burland Croft
The croft at Burland near Trondra is one of the most famous filming locations in Shetland. As well as being Evie Henderson’s fictional home, it was used as a boat building shed in series two.
You can explore the croft on a guided tour or by yourself and learn about how Shetland croft animals are cared for today. You can also take a look at a restored watermill and herb rich pasture.
Shetland is a fantastic place for walking. With quiet side roads and spectacular coastal scenery around every corner, Shetland is a delight to explore by foot.
Shetland’s beautiful lochs and bays provide excellent sea angling, and fishing is a very popular pastime. You can book local boat trips or catch your own fish with a charter company.
Skellwick
Shetland is a subarctic archipelago of islands at the northernmost tip of Scotland. It is made up of more than a hundred islands, with the largest being Mainland Shetland, followed by Unst, Yell and Fetlar.
Shetlands is a wonderful place to visit, with so much to see and do. It’s the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The island has an amazing history. It was once a thriving fishing port, and is now home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland.
This area has also been a favourite location for filming. The rocky beach here overlooks the Drongs, an impressive set of sea stacks that are said to have a menacing presence.
Another major location that’s been used is the Lodberrie – better known as DI Perez’s house. This traditional croft house was built in the 1770s and is one of the 21 Lodberries that line Lerwick’s foreshore today.
