If you've been obsessed with Netflix's most-watched series Squid Game, you probably want to see the filming locations in person. The show is a dystopian thriller about desperate, cash-strapped contestants who compete in death games for a tempting prize.
The show was filmed in Daejeon, Korea's fifth-largest city, a television production hub and only 50 minutes from Seoul by train. Some scenes in the city were filmed at Yangjae Citizen's Forest Subway Station, Namsan Park and the Sangbong Intercity Bus Terminal.
Daejeon
Squid game is one of Netflix’s most popular shows and you’ve probably binge-watched it countless times. It’s also one of the most talked about and has spawned thousands of conversations and memes on Reddit and Facebook.
The show is set in Daejeon, a city in central South Korea that was used for the filming of many of the show’s setpieces. In addition to its own city set, the series also uses other locations from across the country.
If you’re a Squid Game fan, it may be worth considering visiting some of the locations in real life. For example, if you’re in Seoul, check out the Sangbong Intercity Bus Terminal. It’s where Gi-hun (played by Park Hae-soo) tries his luck betting on horses in the first episode!
Seoul
Squid game is a much-loved Korean thriller that has captivated viewers around the world. It centers on a secret group that recruits 456 people to participate in a series of games for a prize pot worth over W45.6 billion.
Once they enter the game, they are drugged and taken to a remote location to compete in challenges that are based on children's games. The stakes are high, as the players are killed if they lose.
The series' first episode starts with a man challenging Gi-hun to a game of ddagji, a popular Korean childhood game where you flip a paper tile over so that it flips over the opponent's. Eventually, the game morphs into something even more bloody.
While Squid Game is set in Seoul, the show has made use of a number of other cities and tourism spots across Korea to portray the world that Gi-hun lives in. One such location is a traditional market called Baegun Market at Samyang-ro 154-gil, which features Cho Sang-woo's mother's seafood shop.
Jeju Island
Despite its relatively small size, Jeju Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Korea. The island is a hotspot for surfing and boasts an impressive range of attractions, including a 7.4km-long lava tube.
As well as being a natural wonder, it also plays host to some enthralling cultural traditions. For instance, the Haenyo (female divers) of Jeju are a unique symbol of this island’s unique culture, which is ranked on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
Another important aspect of this culture is the Mudang (shaman), who is an intermediary between Gods and people. It’s an incredibly important part of the island’s history and a hugely influential element of its distinctive culture.
In addition to the cultural heritages mentioned above, Jeju is home to a number of other attractions, including a world-class aquarium and a public casino. It is also a great place to sample some local cuisine, such as raw seafood and barbecued pork from black pigs.
Incheon International Airport
Most of the larger-than-life visuals in Squid Game were filmed on real-life sets, not CGI. For example, the MC Escher-like staircases and the towering doll in the red-light-green-light game were shot in Daejeon.
Similarly, the island fortress that’s featured in several games was filmed on Seongapdo, an unassuming little island off the coast of Incheon. It’s not a place that would draw much in the way of international tourists, but it does provide a great contrast to Seoul’s grittier streets, and is reminiscent of Jeju Island in the film 'The Last Resort'.
Incheon International Airport is South Korea’s largest and the main gateway for international and domestic travellers. Relax in one of the airport’s Luxe Lounges before your flight, or check out the Korean museum of culture and observation deck. There are also several restaurants and cafes to choose from in the terminal. Alternatively, you can stay at Incheon Airport Transit Hotel, which has rooms for half or full day use and offers all the amenities you need during your transit stay.
