where is tehran filmed

In Apple TV+'s thriller Tehran, Mossad agent Tamar Rabinyan (Niv Sultan) is sent to Iran on her first deep-cover mission. But things don't go according to plan, and Tamar finds herself trapped in the country she was born in, reconnecting with her roots while unwittingly putting everyone she cares about in danger.

Locations

Tehran, Iran’s capital, is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, with a rich variety of ethnic and religious groups. The city is also known as a crucible for creativity, as many of the country’s artists, musicians and filmmakers are based here.

The Israeli spy thriller Tehran stars Niv Sultan as Tamar Rabinyan, a Mossad computer hacker who infiltrates the city on a top-secret mission to destroy Iran’s nuclear reactor. When her plan goes awry, she must plan an operation that will put everyone she loves in danger.

To make Tehran feel authentic, show creator Moshe Zonder spent months researching the Iranian capital. He studied the work of Oscar-winning filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who has crafted a cinematic landscape centered on the intimacy of daily life.

He wanted the series to approach Iran, Iranians and Iranian culture with “the utmost respect, awe, curiosity and love,” he said. Herzberg, who is a former journalist, worked hard to create a realistic environment for filming that reflected the complexity of Tehran and its people.

Transportation

When it comes to transport, Tehran has a well-functioning metro system and there are also buses and taxis. Nevertheless, it is a challenge to get around the city without a car.

Using the metro is one of the best ways to get around and it is worth buying a ticket in advance (at least for one trip). It’s even possible to use your travel card for buses and taxis at any subway station.

To pay, just tap the transport card on a sensor on the train, or touch it in the bus. In both cases, you should always pay the actual value of your ticket, not the maximum fare.

In addition to these methods, bicycles are another alternative for getting around. However, this is not the most common way of traveling.

Accommodations

Tehran offers a huge range of accommodations, from budget hotels and hostels to traditional or contemporary hotels. No matter your taste or budget, we've rounded up the best places to stay in Iran so that you can enjoy your time there as fully as possible.

If you are traveling on a tight budget, try to stay in a hostel. They often have private double rooms, shared kitchens and cozy common spaces to hang out in.

For those looking for a more luxurious experience, we recommend the Parsian Hotel. Its rooms are beautifully furnished and offer a wide selection of dining choices. The hotel is also equipped with various facilities such as a sauna and Jacuzzi.

If you are planning on shooting in Iran, we highly suggest contacting a local fixer or producer to obtain a Film Permit before your arrival. This is essential for filming in Iran and will allow you to get permission from multiple government agencies.

Food

The city of Tehran has a diverse range of restaurants, including local eateries serving traditional Iranian foods. You can also find international eateries that serve Italian, Chinese, Indian, Lebanese and Meditation dishes.

In addition, there are many street food spots in Tehran. This can be a great way to spend time while in the capital.

One of the most popular foods in Tehran is kebab which comes in different varieties and is grilled over charcoal. You can choose from a variety of meat types such as koobideh (ground beef mixed with parsley and onion), kabab barg, kobab torsh and shishlik.

Other street foods you can find include samboseh or Samosa which is a mixture of cooked potato, onion, and meat or chicken in various combinations with spices. These can be served with different sauces or can be eaten as a snack.

Another dish that is quite common in Iran is Ghormeh Sabzi, which is a stew with herbs and pieces of meat. You can also try Fesenjan which is a stew containing walnut, pomegranate sauce and pieces of meat or chicken.
