If you've been watching ITV crime drama 'The Bay', then you'll be familiar with the show's stunning coastal setting. As well as focusing on the roaring tides and elegant beaches, it has also put Morecambe Bay back on the map with its quaint promenade views.
Writer Daragh Carville explained why he chose Morecambe for the series in an interview with Radio Times. 'Morecambe still has that sense of slightly faded grandeur' and he wanted to capture that.
Morecambe Bay
Morecambe Bay is a spectacular part of the UK coast. Stretching for miles from Lancashire to Cumbria, it's one of the most beautiful places in Britain.
It’s a mercurial landscape that reveals itself twice every twenty four hours, with the tide carving it into subtly different reliefs each time. It’s a land of ebb and flow, with the rivers Leven, Kent, Keer, Lune and Wyre draining it, creating a range of peninsulas and estuaries within the bay.
The town has become a popular destination for holidaymakers, with a five-mile stretch of beach and promenade lined with restaurants, cafes and hotels. For series two of the show, a lot of filming took place around Morecambe’s Stone Jetty, the last remaining section of the town’s original Victorian harbour.
The police station has also played a major role in the show, with many exterior shots filmed along Morecambe’s promenade. However, the majority of scenes that take place in the police station; meeting and interview rooms and offices - were filmed at a police station in Manchester.
Morecambe Promenade
Morecambe is a picturesque seaside town in Lancashire that is well worth a visit. Here you can find one of the best promenades in England and take in the stunning sweeping coastline and bay.
Morecambe Promenade is a great place to watch the waves and enjoy a relaxing afternoon stroll. It offers a wide range of places to stop and have a bite to eat along the way.
The iconic Eric Morecambe statue is another popular spot to check out. He stands proudly in his characteristic pose overlooking the choppy waters of Morecambe Bay, and is a must-see for fans of the town.
Morecambe's beach is also where all four series of The Bay have been filmed, specifically around the Stone Jetty which is the only thing that remains of Morecambe's Victorian harbour. This is where most of the show's action takes place.
Morecambe Police Station
Thrilling ITV crime drama The Bay is set in Morecambe and has garnered a loyal following of fans over the years. It focuses on the lives and relationships of local police team members who deal with missing people, murders and other shocking events in their home town.
The coastal location of Morecambe has become a staple of the show and its stunning backdrops perfectly reflect the gripping storyline that revolves around a family searching for their missing teenage twins. Marsha Thomason has taken over the lead role from Morven Christie in series 3, with the show revolving around a new protagonist in this latest run.
Morecambe police station is central to the series as the main character, DS Jenn Townsend (Marsha Thomason), is tasked with helping a shattered family deal with a tragic death. However, she faces her own troubles back at home as she keeps trying to keep her blended family together, while navigating sleepless nights and disagreements with her husband Chris.
Morecambe Town Hall
Morecambe has long been a popular holiday destination, but it's suffered a decline in tourism in recent decades. However, ITV drama The Bay has helped to bring the town back into focus.
Screenwriter Daragh Carville told Radio Times that Morecambe's "sense of faded grandeur" has made it a perfect setting for the show. The Lancashire seaside town offers sprawling skies, windswept beaches and stunning views over the bay towards the Lake District.
Series three sees Morecambe CID's new family liaison officer DS Jenn Townsend arrive in the town, just as promising young boxer Saif is murdered. She's immediately plunged into the murder mystery and has to get to know the family members - including her own twins - as she works to solve the crime.
But despite all the action taking place on the beach, there's a darker undertone to The Bay that sees Saif's killer escaping justice in a very different way. It's a thrilling crime drama, set against the backdrop of Morecambe's spectacular coastline.
