Netflix’s latest drama Maid has been a mainstay in the top 10 for the last week, confronting viewers with the harsh reality of a young mother who must struggle to support her daughter. Based on Stephanie Land’s memoir of the same name, Maid follows Alex Russell (Margaret Qualley) as she struggles to escape an abusive relationship and build a life for herself and her daughter.
Fisher Island
Netflix's new ten-episode drama Maid is based on author Stephanie Land's memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive. It follows a young woman who escapes an abusive relationship and turns to housekeeping to make ends meet.
The evocative series - which has been a hit on Netflix since it arrived in October 2021 - centres around Alex (Margaret Qualley), a single mother who turns to housekeeping after she and her daughter Maddy escape an emotionally abusive relationship. The Netflix show was adapted from Land's memoir and is being applauded for its nuanced portrayal of abuse survivors.
Although the series is based in Washington State, many of its scenes are filmed on Vancouver Island. The main location was Colwood, which serves as Port Hampstead in the series, while Saanich's waterside Ten Mile Point neighbourhood was utilised for Fisher Island.
Port Hampstead
Based on the bestselling memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, the Netflix series has captured audiences' imagination. It's a compelling story about domestic abuse, poverty and family that is very relatable to many people worldwide.
The show's protagonist Alex Russell (Margaret Qualley) lives in a poverty-stricken coastal town, Port Hampstead, and works as a house cleaner for wealthy clients on Fisher Island across the water. It's a clear depiction of income disparities between wealthier and poorer towns in the Pacific Northwest.
Both Port Hampstead and Fisher Island are fictional settings, but they're based on the real-life town of Port Townsend in Washington. Filming on the show took place in Greater Victoria, Canada and was completed in 2020 and 2021.
Saanich
The new Netflix drama Maid is based on Stephanie Land's memoir "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive". It follows Alex (Margaret Qualley), who escapes an abusive relationship to find a job cleaning houses.
The show was filmed entirely in the Greater Victoria area, making it the region's largest film production to date. More than 160 locations were used in the series, including Oak Bay, Sooke, Sidney, Esquimalt, Saanich, North Saanich, and Colwood.
A luxury waterside house in the Ten Mile Point neighborhood of Saanich was reportedly used to film scenes from the first job that Alex cleans for Regina, a wealthy lawyer who owns a home on Fisher Island. Also filmed in the district were a number of street scenes and some landscape shots.
For those who love the series, it's worth traveling to Vancouver Island to see some of the locations where Maid was filmed. It's a great way to connect with the characters, and to experience B.C.'s stunning coastal scenery.
Greater Victoria
Several areas on and around Vancouver Island were used as filming locations for Maid, the new Netflix series that tells the story of a young single mother who escapes an abusive relationship and becomes a housecleaner. The production created hundreds of jobs during the global pandemic and made an impact on the local community.
The 10-episode series is loosely based on Stephanie Land’s book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. It’s set in Port Hampstead, Washington, but much of the show was shot in BC -- marking Victoria’s biggest production to date with a $10 million budget.
The series takes place on Fisher Island, a fictional community modelled after Whidbey Island, as well as in Port Hampstead, Port Townsend and Saanich. The opulent oceanfront home where Regina (played by Anika Noni Rose) hires Alex is on Ten Mile Point, a peninsula overlooking the Haro Strait in Saanich. The Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal and Patricia Bay Highway were also used as filming locations.
