The Paramount+ crime drama Mayor of Kingstown stars Hawkeye's Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky, a power broker in a town where the main source of income is a prison industrial complex. It's filmed in Toronto, Hamilton, Burlington, and Kingston in Canada.
Co-creator Hugh Dillon grew up in Kingston, Ontario, and formed the idea for the series with Taylor Sheridan a decade ago. They shifted the show's production team to Pittsburgh for season two.
The Union Progress
If you watch Mayor of Kingstown, the first thing you'll notice is that it takes place in what appears to be a real town -- but does that really exist? The show's co-creator, Hugh Dillon, grew up in Kingston, Ontario, which is where the series is set.
Dillon said that he and Taylor Sheridan have been working on the show for years and had everything mapped out for multiple seasons, even before filming began in Pittsburgh. But he added that it was only when they filmed here that they felt like "Pittsburgh is a character on the show."
Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner), the middle McLusky brother, acts as the power broker for the city of Kingstown, which has seven prisons within a 10-mile radius. When his older brother Mitch is murdered, Mike must decide if he wants to be the mayor of Kingstown or leave the town for good. Throughout the season, the power dynamics are upended inside and outside of the prison.
The Carrie Blast Furnaces
A lot of the filming for season two took place around Pittsburgh. It's based in the Strip District, but also at Lake Erie and the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Swissvale.
A recent announcement has prompted the region to invest in a new sound stage and production facility on the site of the former blast furnaces. It will be the first purpose-built production space in Allegheny County and is expected to boost the city's film industry.
The Carrie Furnaces were built in 1884 and operated until 1982 as part of U.S. Steel’s Homestead Steel Works in Pittsburgh. Today, the furnaces are preserved by nonprofit Rivers of Steel and open to the public.
The tour takes visitors through the blast furnaces, an oversized brick blower house, an ore yard, and a car dumper. The museum also features period art exhibits. In addition to tours, the site hosts a number of public events and activities.
The Hartwood Acres Mansion
Located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Hartwood Acres is home to one of the largest and most spectacular country estates in the region. It is a 629-acre park that includes a stately Tudor Mansion (erected in 1929), a cottage, a stable complex and a gate lodge.
The mansion is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Allegheny County. Tours of the 31-room estate are offered by trained docents, who lead visitors through rooms that contain original collections of English and American antiques.
In addition to the mansion, Hartwood is also a beautiful equestrian arts showplace, featuring riding trails, show rings and steeplechase tracks. The estate also boasts a sculpture garden and an outdoor amphitheater, where the community can enjoy free concerts on Sunday evenings.
Mary Flinn Lawrence, who created the estate in 1924 and later sold it to Allegheny County in 1976, was a prominent philanthropist. She also was active in civic and political initiatives.
McKees Rocks
McKees Rocks is a small borough at the intersection of the Ohio River and Chartiers Creek, and it's a popular destination for tourists. It's also home to a synagogue, Ahavas Achim, which dates back to at least the late 19th century.
The town is a hub for local manufacturing industries and it's been the home of a number of sound stages. The mayor of kingstown, a Jeremy Renner-led prison drama that filmed in season 1 in Kingston, Ontario, has migrated to Pittsburgh for its second season.
It's a big show that requires a huge production staff, so it’s no surprise it has taken up residence in our area. Keezer says these longer commitment shoots are becoming more common as more streaming services want them.
Several scenes take place at St Mary’s Ukrainian Church in McKees Rocks, as well as Hartwood Acres Mansion and Station Brake Cafe in Wilmerding. The show also shot scenes at the City County Building in Downtown Pittsburgh.
