Yellowstone is a popular AMERICAN drama series set in Montana. It centers on the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana.
The show is known for its stunning views of the Bitterroot Mountains. Many episodes feature breathtaking landscapes that are 100% real.
The Dutton Ranch
The wildly popular Paramount Network drama Yellowstone centers on the Dutton family, who operate a controversial Montana ranch bordering Yellowstone National Park. The series has a high viewership thanks to its compelling mix of soapy melodrama and gritty modern cowboy storylines.
The Dutton family’s main lodge is a 5,000-square-foot mansion on Chief Joseph Ranch, a working cattle ranch near Darby, Montana. The home also features two cabins that guests can rent out when filming isn’t taking place.
The show also explores the tensions that arise when big government and local stakeholders clash over the rights to land. The series focuses on John Dutton (Kevin Costner), his wife Emma (Taylor Sheridan), and their four children: Lee, Beth, Jamie and Kayce.
The Four Sixes Ranch
During the fourth season of Yellowstone, a plot line saw Jimmy (Jefferson White) get shipped off to The Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. This real-life working ranch is located near Guthrie, about a four-hour drive west of Dallas.
It’s one of the largest ranches in Texas with 266,255-plus acres. It’s a sprawling enterprise that’s renowned for producing some of the best American Quarter Horses and Superior Angus Cattle.
The property was recently sold to a Tinseltown group, led by Paramount Network show creator Taylor Sheridan, who grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Paschal High School. Sheridan is also a co-creator and producer of the popular Yellowstone series as well as a spin-off prequel, 1883.
The Governor’s House
Yellowstone is one of the most popular tv shows of 2018. It follows the Dutton family, who owns the largest contiguous cattle ranch in Montana.
The show’s characters are often surrounded by stunning mountains and countrysides that capture the essence of Big Sky country. But the show is also filmed in other states, including Utah.
The series filmed 70 to 75 percent of its scenes in Utah. However, the production decided to stop filming in Utah due to its limited tax incentives.
The Old Supreme Court Chamber
The Old Supreme Court Chamber served as the home of the United States’ highest court from 1810 to 1860. During that time, it heard and decided some of the most important cases in history including Amistad and Dred Scott.
As you walk through the robing room, you will see a bust of Chief Justice Roger Taney. It is one of only two busts to be displayed in the room.
Designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the chamber was the first room ever constructed for the Supreme Court. It was used by the court from 1810 to 1860 and is a significant architectural achievement.
The Spanish Fork Fairgrounds
Until season four, most of the Yellowstone scenes were shot in Utah on three sound stages. But after season four, production has shifted entirely to Montana.
A large part of the series is filmed at Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, a picturesque guest ranch and working cattle ranch just outside Missoula, a town of 90,000 people in western Montana.
The ranch is surrounded by two mountain ranges in the Bitterroot Valley, providing stunning views of Trapper Peak.
John Dutton’s log mansion is a part of this working ranch, along with several other areas that serve as the main set for the show. The property also features two cabins that can be rented to visitors between March and December.
The Daly Mansion
Yellowstone is a popular Neo-Western drama that takes us to the wilds of the mountain west. The series’s filming locations are spread out throughout the state of Montana, so you can get a taste of the real Big Sky Country while you visit.
Located outside Hamilton, The Daly Mansion is one of the most famous Montana buildings on the show. It was once the home of Marcus Daly, one of the copper kings of Montana.
Currently, it serves as a museum and tours are offered. It also offers a variety of events and activities that will transport you to another time and place.
