where is wentworth filmed

Wentworth is a contemporary revival of a classic Australian prison drama series. This show has gained a dedicated fan base and has garnered several AACTA and Logie awards.

Over the seasons, it has changed its main set from a warehouse in Clayton South to a purpose-built one about 20 miles away in Newport, Victoria. However, where is Wentworth filmed?

What is Wentworth Prison?

'Wentworth' is one of the most successful shows on TV that prioritises women-centric stories and prison settings. Its storylines and premise draw inspiration from a variety of real-life people to create a realistic portrayal.

Compared to similar series such as Orange Is The New Black and Prisoner, Wentworth is a darker and edgier show. This is mainly due to the fact that the cast members are more diverse.

It also has a plethora of contrasting characters and ideologies, which makes the series more relevant. For example, it introduces an Indigenous character to the cast, which is a rarity in prison shows.

But what really makes Wentworth Prison stand out is the way it handles relationships and tensions. It ratchets these up to the max, giving them meaning through a Sopranos-like lens. The result is a series of riveting, sometimes brutally violent scenes that are always anchored by a compelling female character.

Where is Wentworth Prison filmed?

If you're a fan of Orange Is the New Black, you've probably already heard about Wentworth, the hit Australian prison drama. This series follows Bea Smith as she attempts to survive in a corrupt female prison ecosystem.

For the first three seasons, the show filmed on purpose-built sets in Clayton, Victoria. From season four onwards, production moved to a larger set in Newport, Victoria.

The new location doubled up for some of the most important parts of the show, including the laundry room, cells, shower block, and reception area. The new set reportedly features some removable walls, doors, and fittings from the previous location.

However, when the warehouse owner announced that it was being sold and would be knocked down in July 2014, production had to find a new location for filming. They used a clever fire storyline to move the cast and crew to a new wing of the facility, allowing them to film in a new setting while still maintaining the continuity of the story.

What is the Wentworth Prison set like?

The Wentworth Prison set is a bit of an oddity. It’s located on the side of Channel 10’s studios in Nunawading, Melbourne. It’s also surrounded by wire fences, which makes it look a lot more like an actual jail.

Previously, the set was filmed inside a warehouse that was located at 1408 Centre Rd in Clayton South, Victoria. But after the third season, the set got a makeover and moved to another location about 20 miles away in Newport.

In a recent interview, Danielle Cormack, 50, who played Bea Smith from 2013 to 2016, said the new set was "a real show-stopper." She also confirmed that there were some 'argy-bargies' on the set, but they’ve managed to keep their friendships intact.

If you’re a fan of the series, then you know it’s not only one of the best shows on TV, but also an incredible achievement to be able to film in Australia and create a fan base around the world. It’s a show that has earned critical acclaim and won many awards over the years, so you can be sure it will be on your must-watch list when Season 8 finally rolls around!

What is the Wentworth Prison cast like?

The Wentworth Prison cast is like a family. The Australian series was inspired by Orange is the New Black and has been a hit on both the small screen and on Netflix where it remains the most popular TV drama in the country.

Pamela Rabe has won multiple AACTA Awards for her role as Joan Ferguson, including Best Actress in a TV Drama and Best Lead Performance. She’s also a Logie Award winner.

Nicole da Silva, known as tough girl Franky Doyle, won an ASTRA Award for her role in the 2014-2015 series. She was also a TV WEEK Logie nominee for her role in season five.

Bernard Thornton, who played crooked officer Jake Stewart, has since gone on to work in local and international productions. His latest show, Network 10 comedy-drama My Life Is Murder, features Lucy Lawless as his co-star.

As Wentworth wraps up, Stellar has been chatting to some of the cast about their time on the set and their current lives. They share a love for the realism of the show but agree that it can take its toll on their health and wellbeing, which is why they are so glad to be able to meet up after filming wraps.
