One of the most popular television shows on the air, Yellowstone is a neo-western drama that has racked up some massive ratings. Its gorgeous landscape is a testament to the show’s underlying theme of ranching, land enhancement, and power.
But where does the stunning scenery filmed on the show actually come from? It’s a real working cattle ranch and family home called Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby.
The Dutton Ranch
Paramount’s Yellowstone has become the latest show to take the neo-western genre by storm, with viewership skyrocketing since its release. It centers on the Dutton family, whose ranch in Montana is surrounded by beautiful mountains and stunning scenery.
The Duttons’ eldest son, John (Kevin Costner), is a self-described cowboy and a man of many contradictions. He’s ruthless and abrasive, but he also has a deep connection to his land.
It’s his obsession with protecting it that drives the drama on Yellowstone and he’s likely based on two North American ranching icons: Bill Galt of Montana and W.T. Waggoner of Texas.
Despite his ruthlessness, John is a good guy in many ways, as he’s a big part of keeping his ranch from becoming part of a national park and is constantly looking to improve its reputation. He also takes a hard line on land management and is willing to fight for it.
The Duttons’ ranch, in Darby, Montana, is a real working cattle ranch. It’s home to a 5,000-square-foot mansion, and there are even cabins guests can rent out when filming isn’t taking place.
The Broken Rock Indian Reservation
Yellowstone, a drama series that airs on Paramount Network, revolves around the Dutton family’s ranch. It’s a massive contiguous property that borders the Broken Rock Indian Reservation and Yellowstone National Park, and the Duttons are constantly fighting outside developers to protect their land.
Chief Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham of Comanche heritage, is the show’s Native American lead and is determined to make sure the Duttons keep control of their property. As a result, Rainwater and his assistants (played by Mo Brings Plenty) take great pains to make sure the scenes depicting Native American ceremonies are authentic.
According to Marshall Moore, the Vice President of Operations and Marketing at Utah Film Studios, over half of Yellowstone’s first three seasons were filmed in the state. Many scenes from Utah towns like Oakley, Heber City, Kamas, Logan and Grantsville feature in the series.
The Schwartz & Meyer Bank Building
If you’ve watched Yellowstone, then you know that the show takes place in Montana and is filmed primarily at Chief Joseph Ranch. The ranch is a real-life working cattle ranch in the small mountain town of Darby, Montana.
During filming, the ranch is closed to the public and visitors are not allowed to enter. However, those who want to see the show’s set can rent guest cabins at the ranch for a truly authentic cowboy experience.
It’s no secret that the Dutton family owns the largest ranch in Montana, a vast property that borders Yellowstone National Park and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation. This creates a great deal of tension within the ranch and among the characters, as they battle outside land developers who are seeking to seize their property.
Beth Dutton, the spitfire daughter of John Dutton, uses her position in the financial world to defend her family’s lands. Previously, she had worked at Schwartz & Meyer, a bank based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Ogden’s 25th Street
Several scenes from Yellowstone were filmed at Ogden’s 25th Street, a three-block district filled with great restaurants, art galleries, and shops. Located about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City, Ogden is a railroad town that’s surrounded by magnificent mountains with awesome hiking and mountain biking trails.
When you’re in Ogden, support the small businesses that are helping to fuel our world-class outdoor recreation community. Go to a local grocery store, pick up a locally made craft beer or eat at one of the many excellent restaurants around town.
Ogden is also a hub for world-class skiing, mountain biking, hiking, camping and fun water sports. Its chefs, artists and craftsmen bring a wealth of talent and knowledge to the area.
